G'day Harry.
Just measured mine, got 0.535". I only used a vernier (don't have a depth micrometer) so took 10 measurements and took the average. My pinion measured from the back face to the front edge of the teeth was 0.530". Add the gasket and there should be 15 thou" clearance.
Has your crankcase timing chest face been faced (machined/lapped)?

My pinion is a tight fit on the shaft so I heat it with a butane torch and it falls on.  *bash* burnt my finger  *shh* Richard *ex*

This pump shows a bit of contact between it and pinion.

I wonder if. when assembled your new pump was skimmed on the joint surface to align the surfaces of new body and old nose and too much material was removed?

Also worth check the key just incase it stands a bit too proud and prevents pinion fully seating.

Harry,

You.mentioned that the crank end play was shimmed.to 0.002". Do you know what the shim stack thickness was needed to get there? If the problem is being too far right, I'm guessing around 0.050".

Well from Richards readings im only .010" out so my crank position seems to be ok. i cannot remember what shims went in as its been stood for a while waiting for this pump. One new thing though, a friend of mine who has asked me to build his long stroke engine has the same recon pump from them, and sure enough the cut away around the gear is 40 thou lower, and i can get the pump face up to the crankcase, it still just touches the pinion but thats without a gasket. So more telephone conversations will be needed.

Harry just a though, I suppose you are fitting the fiber washer between the worm drive housing of the oil pump and the crankcase part no. 67-1394

G'day all.
I must be missing something here. Looking at my two I can't see how ware on the pump body extension is rubbing on the pinion as in JulianS picture. The mounting holes must be very sloppy over the studs and pump pushed up to the pinion before tightening the nuts.  *dunno*
The closest thing to the pinion on mine is the boss on the extension housing.
All buttoned back up now so can't do any more checks.
Cheers

I cannot get the pump close enough to tighten down on said washer Peter , As i said the second pump i looked at yesterday is a much better fit, and the cutaway is .040" lower. So its going back to them again.
