Progress Report
« on: 28.01. 2018 20:20 »
Hello All. Just to let you know that my restoration is progressing well, by which I mean that the bits are all coming off relatively easily. Remembering that I only have some evenings and weekends to work on the bike, so far, I’ve removed the tank and seat (obviously), exhaust, carb, front wheel and mudguard, headlight and cowl, switchgear, cables and wiring harness (what was left of it!).

The mudguard is cracked and the stays are bent but hopefully I’ll get it welded and straightened this week at a local ‘engineering smithy’ who does some good metal work for the company I work for. Everything is getting the ‘keep or replace’ assessment and so far, it’s looking good.

I’m particularly pleased that most of the bodywork is salvageable even though I’m going to need a good bead/powder blaster – any recommendation in the North West? Even the airbox is OK, and it’s in a bit better condition than the rather rusty example that’s just gone for £234 on ebay. That’s money I can spend elsewhere on the bike!

Obviously, its early days in the great scheme of things, but so far so good… and here’s a picture to prove it!

G'day Simon.
Don't rush anything. An extra week or three may mean the difference between an enjoyable ride or a long push.
Cheers

Good luck with your project. You're lucky to have the original tinware.

Thanks Andrew. I still can't quite get my head around how much the air filter/battery box went for on ebay last night. I shall cherish my scarred and rusty tinware with new respect!

I think the reason those bits are rare and consequently expensive is because back in the day many young guns thought they were sissy and chucked them away so they could fit sexy intake stacks.

Yep, and because that was done to mine, I now have to fit those same stacks!

G'Day Simon,
I am sure you won't take 33 years like I did *roll*. Most of what I did I could not remember doing. But I did keep lots of photos.

Bet it will look like a shiny new pin when you have finished it  *smile* and as for not chucking anything away I go head first into the Bin when the Mrs has a sort out,she dumps stuff and I get it back out !  *smile* *smile*,got loads of nik nak tubs and boxes, keep everythin that might come in useful and take broken things apart to keep screws and metal bits for making brackets.
