A65 OIF Clutch Advice ( NOT A10 )
« on: 06.04. 2018 16:44 »
My new clutch was fitted on the bench during a full engine build., new plates and correct springs and a spare pressure plate as the old one had a bodged adjusting nut. Today I fitted a new clutch cable NOS, The push rod does seem to be reaching the adjusting nut and the clutch has no travel whatsoever. I took off the pressure plate to access the push rod. it is exactly 11" long and is blued one end. The parts list states that it should be 11" & 1/16" long. Would this lack of travel prevent the clutch disengaging ?
To compound problems, the bike is on the stand and I am not getting any younger. I cannot get the Clutch Spring Nuts to start on the wobbly clutch spring bolts. In fact one now has a knackered thread.
Any top tips for getting these bolts on by a silly old sod sitting on the garage floor. At least it's not cold.  *????*

Hi ,i am just after rebuilding an A 65 clutch and ran into the same problem.
The new discs are slightly thicker than the originals so your push rod is too short by about 1/4".(or a smidgeon more)
You can either cut it in half, temper the cut ends an insert a 3/16 ball bearing in between or get another pushrod and butt the two cut ends after tempering them.
They are an akward diameter  and a 6 mm rod won't slide smoothly.
Hope this helps

I have now got the clutch back together on the warm day. I took off the right hand casing and greased the cam-thrust mechanism. Now when I engage the clutch a horrible noise comes from cam thrust. Although the clutch is working this noise cannot be ignored. Section B23 of my manual does not show any adjustment of this item as it is held together by a spring and split pin. Has anyone got any experience in this department please.

I removed the cam thrust today, split the whole lot and gave it a Gunk bath. The three ball bearings and seating's looked good after a wash. Reassembled with copper grease, adjusted the cable and clutch nut as per BSA Workshop Manual. Now have a silent correct clutch operation. Still need a new longer push rod or a longer adjusting stud if I could get one ? At least I have a strong clutch that seems to work fine.  *smile*

G'day A10 JWO.
Did you insert the 7/32" ball behind the pushrod pin? #39 on this page https://tinyurl.com/yb2c27xy

Hi Muskrat. There appears to be a ball bearing in the depths of the push rod pin ( 57-4038 ) 32 on the Dragonfly list. I have tried to remove it but it seems fixed about 1/4" inside the pin or am I missing something, input appreciated. Thanks.

G'day Colin.
It's been a while since I've been in there. The ball should be free and come out with a magnetized screwdriver (or anything to fit in the hole). Would it be possible that a 1/4" ball has been jammed in there? If you can't get it out that side you will have to push it out from the clutch side.
Cheers

That Small pin with the ball bearing in it (#39??) Is a sticky wicket.  In all the ones I have seen, that ball is seated in there either by a pinched tube, circlip or something???  But have never seen one with that ball removed.

That Pin seems to be one of the most elusive BSA parts and MOST BSA Projects I have or have worked on 99% of the time that pin is missing.  I could use about 12-14 more of them as I have a number of A65 projects in very extreme basket case form and I have only 1 of those pins.

I cant say for ALL unit BSAs, but its quite common to segment the pushrod shaft and add a small ball bearing between 2 sections of the shafts and some shops recommend it.  I believe Dyno Dave Comeau talks about it as well as how to stop gear oil migration onto the clutches, but I have also seen it mentioned in MAP cycle install instructions for their belt drives and pressure plates
