Shooting Star Barn Find
« on: 19.04. 2018 16:18 »
I am going to look at a complete S/Star Saturday. Not been used in many years. The owner died about five years ago and the widow is now willing to sell. She has no price in mind ( she tells me ).
She is being a bit shrewd. On ebay these are going for £7,000 upwards. It has a V5. I told her to ignore ebay as they are generally dreamers prices. I am hoping someone on here may have some tactical advice. Thanks.

Not all Ebay prices are. If you search for sold or completed listings you'll get a better idea of what they're fetching now.

Since it's tactics and not price advice you're looking for, I do have some advice. Once you've decided what a fair price is, offer a little bit more so you will enjoy the bike on a clear conscience.

Excellent advice Richard !!

As the original poster of this bike and spare engine etc, I really hope it can find a new home and a good deal for both buyer and my neighbour can be agreed regardless of any 'tactics.'.

It will be very interesting to get someone else's opinion on the bike and spares etc, and it would be even better to see it being used locally.

For the record, I have NO suspicion that JWO would be anything other than honorable.

The lady in question was not in as arranged, probably a bit emotional. Will knock in a couple of days, only 300 yards away. Don't want to be pushy. Will let you know.

Little story here.  I heard about my A10 for sale from the son of the owner.  He (the owner) was in his late 70s with cancer but was still pretty shrewd.  After chatting for a bit, he showed me the bike which was complete with some spares, including new downpipes.  It had been in his garage untouched for 10 years.  When I asked how much, he said £1200, Yes, £1200. *eek* Instinctively, I said £1100 (you've got to barter).  He said ok so long as I was going to ride it and not sell it on for a quick buck.  I told him I wanted the bike to restore and ride, and I'd bring it back to him when it was complete.  I did and he was thrilled (although not well).  The deal was even better when he threw in the lift it was on (full size) which I did sell on for £180.  £920 essentially bought the bike. :o  Not sure if the guy is still with us, but selling it at that price allowed me to throw another £4.5k at it to get it into the condition it's in now.  It also allowed me to ride it and have a ball, exactly what he would have wanted. *wink2*
