What did I buy???
« on: 12.05. 2018 22:00 »
Took the Velocette on a poker run with a bunch of (98) Harleys and met a guy who said he had some pre-unit BSA parts. Bought most of an engine and a tranny. Engine numbers are weird. Stamped HHC, but flat top pistons (.060 over), thick flange cylinder, iron head with bottom fin broken all around. Figured maybe I can have a spare engine, or at least parts. Wondering about the brass spigot(?) on the primary cover. Auxiliary breather?

Well the engine number has obviously been messed with and that MIGHT mean it is/was “hot”. I guess it was something like CA10S 595? (If so that would mean 54 plunger super flash engine).

The “HHC” for “high compression” looks correct to me but who knows once it’s established the numbers been altered!

That number has been well messed with, possibly just to impress. I should not think that the Stolen Vehicle Squad would be able to find an owner, only chassis numbers are stored on the Police National Computer unless the engine matches the frame, then it may flag up. I would not worry, trust me ??

Looking at the numbers again, I think CA10S may have been correct. The first letter is overstamped with an elongated H, but appears to have originally been either C or G. The 8 may well have been an S. Cylinder looks good, no broken fins. I'll have to disassemble to check crank and rods. Cam looks ok
Tranny parts look good. Mag with advance complete except for cap. For $100, I'm okay with it. If I'd only kept that rolling chassis.....

If its any help. Here is a picture of a crankcase half I have here. Presumably factory original numbers.

It’s a plunger engine case, so no possibility of it being a road or super rocket engine (or having an “R” in the engine number, but I’m no expert!)

Sorry Kiwi; I'm no expert, but Plungers are ZA10/7 up to '53, and BA10/7 through to '57 (A7 Plunger seemingly discontinued after '54)- The engine in question has separate (Primary) chaincase....CA10/7 are S/A...

According to BSAOC records CA10SR is a Spitfire Scrambler prefix. Strange, as you would think SR = Super Rocket, but as most will know, they are stamped CA10R, along with the earlier Road Rockets (as KeithA's 1957 RR crankcase in photo).

I also think the original S has been overstamped to make it into an 8 on Jachenbach's crankcase and for some strange reason the C has been overstamped to make it a weird size H.
The Spitfire Scrambler numbers started from 340 in1958 and from 770 in 1959 - so it must be 1958.

You youngsters gotta learn to look after your clothes.  Pink wool ain’t cheap!

Has someone altered it to “HA” as an outlaw club allusion?

CA10SR I reckon.  I often think my GF is an allusion to a particular type of expletive I use when I get a new problem.  Alternatively it could stand for 'God Forsaken'.
