G'day edboy.
So it's a 276? Has it only just started doing this? What has been done since it was OK? Is it a frayed cable? Make sure it's free moving and adjusted to allow the slide to drop all the way.
Sounds like an air leak. Try spraying wd spray at the flange and the top nut (that holds the top on the body) while it's doing it. A drop in revs indicates an air leak.
Cheers

thanks for reply muskrat.stripped and re assembled today .miles better but still hangs slightly. it must be the cable as the rest was a dirty slide and carb.
the pilot jet is fixed on this carb?
only the float height to adjust?
