Don't know the volume Bob, but you fill it until it comes out the drain/level plug late models or the level screw (primary case screw removed, is it third from the front??) on earlier models.
Sound like you wont it in cc's tho

I think that as long as the chain gets wetted there is enough oil. Or is that only the earlier models?

I was thinking to make a suggestion about this yesterday but you've saved me a bit....The method I've adopted is to shine a light (or sunlight in a mirror *smile*), straight down through the inspection hole so you can see the screw bosses, and put in the oil until you an see it somewhere near the boss you need.

A bit off topic now, but similar to check the gearbox oil; By my reckoning, the oil should be around about the top of the layshaft, speedo drive of which can just be seen under the mainshaft.

May as well chuck in the engine oil; Oil level a bit below the return hole (looking through the Inspection hole).

I figured they are called 'Inspection Holes/Covers ' for a reason, so may as well make good use of them    *smile*

I asked SRM and they said 180cc was enough. The chain only needs a splash every now and then, better than drowning the plates.

Does it even matter how much is in there if you use the overflow method for determining when full? It's little enough that you shouldn't have to plan precisely for how much is bought.

Yep! 8 fl oz (225 cc).
I'm currently using Morris Golden Film SAE 20/50 as I've got a full 5L can of it to use up. Previously had Morris Suspension 20 WT (fork oil) in there as I read somewhere it's better then ATF because of it's anti-foaming properties. Both seem fine with SRM 4-spring clutch.
