...just exactly what kind of 'bang' and 'rattle' was it....from where-ish...?
The 'knock', as that's a better description sounds like it's from the drive side

I snapped a crank once and it would've also got me a few Km's home, except we were still in miles then...and it got me home
That's what I fear. You're the second person to tell a story about riding home with a broken crank!

I've taken the top end off and can see nothing wrong! Pistons do not have any obvious vertical slack. There were no nasty bits sitting on the sump mesh. A fine grey slurry around the magnetic sump plug, (presumably from running in new big end shells) not much and no steel filings. I'm thinking of flushing the crankcase through in case there is a little bit of something lurking in there, but you'd expect to see the evidence.

Worried about cracked crankshaft; I'm going to take off the engine shock absorber to see if I can give it a wiggle. duTch want's me to measure mine, (and the shock absorber spring).

Re flushing crankcase: What would you use? If I use petrol will it dry up the journals too much? What about Paraffin/Kerosene or Diesel?

I would use paraffin to flush, drain it out, fill with new oil run the engine then change the oil again.

Roy, I was thinking that maybe the knocking was caused by some small part falling into the case. I was going to basically wash it out hoping that any crap would fall out of the sump. I've had a good peer inside with my super bright LED torch and decided that there is nothing alien in the case.

What I have found and that has shocked me is wear on the cam followers. I've only done about 3 miles! They look like they've been in for years! Can you see in pic 3, that there is sharp, raised edge left by the wear? The cam trough was good and oily when I took the lid off, so they've not been running dry. I always oil parts that are going to be rubbing together anyway.

I'm wondering if the noise that I heard was a sudden massive increase in valve clearance. I'm trying to convince myself that that is what it was. I should have got followers from SRM; I guess that's what I'll have to do now, and try to get a refund on those dodgy ones.

Jesus H Christ, those SRM followers must have diamonds set into them; £175!!!! Regardless, I've ordered a set and paid for Special Delivery. You never know, I may yet get to the camp in West Yorkshire at the weekend.  *good3*

Jeez GB, you sure they aren’t made out of cheese? I joined a picture of the followers that came out of my SA. They have been in for at least 15 years and 20000 miles. Just make sure there isn’t an underlying problem like lack of lubricant or something. I do have the idea that they have to be of softer material than the cam so the wear will be on the followers and not on the cam, but yours are a bit to soft I would guess.
