GB is not OK, again!

greybeard you are amazing, you've now been practicing riding push rods. I find it near on impossible to ride a push rod. then again mine are the bsa ones with  a dome  that matches the followers. whats with these hole up the middle all about

 Fairly sure my old ones that were in the engine when I bought it in ~'77/8 were like that- maybe they're a Plunger era thing

Still it sounds fishy with both inlet adjusters down that far. Almost like the valve stems need caps (65-209) like the old long strokes.
Any time I've had a pushrod sitting on the edge of a follower the adjuster had to be wound right out so I knew something was wrong.

I still have not been able to get out; I've been carrying out taxi driver duties! Now, we are in the middle of 'schools-out rush hour', after that it's 'works finished rush hour'. Our Fridays are always very busy here; how about your area?

Anyhow, I just wheeled the bike out into the yard and started it. It sounds proper. We'll see what happens when it's been for a run!

Yes, those inlet tappet adjusters are a worry but at least they are both the same. The exhaust ones are normally adjusted.

Any time I've had a pushrod sitting on the edge of a follower the adjuster had to be wound right out so I knew something was wrong.

Seems that the one I got wrong yesterday must have been on the edge of the cup, but as they are screwed down so far when properly adjusted, (since the new bits were put in) it was not obvious that the other one was actually too high; it appeared normal and the other one was unusually low! Does that make sense?

I wish I'd compared the old followers with the SRM ones more carefully; maybe the inlet ones are shorter.

The Inlet rockers look identical, but maybe both have been bent to the same degree, somehow? I know the steel SRM pushrods are very strong but if the rockers have been bent I'd expect the pushrods to have suffered also.

The followers should be the same length. The rockers are very strong, a pushrod would bend before a rocker and both the same would be like me winning lotto.

The engine sounds great! Maybe I'll just keep it in the shed and start it occasionally; I don't want to risk busting it again!

The rush hour traffic has eased off so I'm taking the bike out now.

I am so infrequently right when it comes to these long-distance diagnosis guessing games, could I be forgiven for beaming just a little? (Hmm? What was that thing they said comes just before the fall?)

Well, minimally, the rocker covers need to come off for a look-see. I know this is nearly impossible after all the chatter about it, and I don't want to offend by even thinking to mention it, but could it be the sound made after a lip-riding pushrod finds home 10 miles in?
