What's Wrong A7SS Rear Hub?(Solved Thanks)
« on: 18.06. 2018 16:49 »
Hi folks trying to reuild a 59 A7SS. I seem to have all the parts for the wheel--correct hub, sprocket... but a slightly weird  half-spindle ( dummy spindle)Looking for what I have done wrong here, enclosed pix of each half of my 59 FW hub

1) The  spindle nut  sold me 42-6077 is too big for my half-spindle ( presumed  a 42-6325) However I found in my assortment of large used 20 TPI nuts one that does.

2) So fitted the sprocket distance collar as see   to the sprocket side, and done up the 42-4320 rear spindle  all the way with the brake side spacer 47-6330 .

If the distance collar e does not go there, the sprocket nuts will foul the swinging arm so that must be it's position IMO, despite the parts book.

3) However as in   IMAGE 2  there now remains a gap on the brake side.

All I am missing fitting  is the large spindle washer, the  dummy  spindle washer and the  dummy spindle  nut. Sure surely those are not going to make a difference?

BSA parts book is hardly a help on this rather baffling wheel.

On your 1st pic. it looks as though you haven't screwed the spindle in far enough.
There should be a washer between the frame and the spindle nut.
I have just taken a couple of photos of my 58 A7ss for you.
Hope it helps.

Roy.

are these stainless steel by any chance, I'm thinking it is very easy to strip a thread on SS (always lube), suggest you make sure the spindle is full threading into the dummy spindle

It is stainless. Most of the nuts and bolts are stainless on my bike and I always put a smear of Never Seez on the threads.
Although, the small half of the spindle is the original because the stainless one, from CPC, is too loose for the bearing.

Thanks folks for these replies and pics...no I am not fitting stainless anywhere in this set up. I realise the washers are not there but they certainly won't take up that big 3/8" gap on the brake side....nor will doing up the axle spindle help, I have it pretty tight..tho to make sure tomorrow I will do some depth guage work. Still a mystery to me..unless the dummy spindle was not threaded far enough when made?

G'day Peter.
You may have a mix of 56-57 parts in there. The larger nut was a giveaway.
I'll post parts list tonight, late for work now.

Hi Musky...that half spindle drove me NUTZ............. I put the thread gauge on her and she read 18 TPI -ish, not 20... tho with a slight effort a 20 TPI nut can be forced on and no damage done. But there is no 18 TPI thread  on my charts that makes sense for that size nut.  Blow me when the left hand  "correct" nut arrived from Dragan and is too big.. slips right over the threads of the dummy spindle.

My hub is 42-6313, correct for '59.  The sprocket is  correct for year, ditto the brake plate.

Got the axle spindle, left hand  nut and spacer(s) from Dragan, who seem to know their stuff.... the dummy spindle came with the hub, nice new bearing, painted and very tidy job.

It seems there was a different thread on very early 63-64 A50's/A65's which used a similar dummy spindle, but I don't have an dimensions to check those specs against mine.

G'day Peter.
I only have a 56-57 Alloy (Ariel) rear hub so I drew a mud map of its axle. Compare with your bits.
Cheers

Got soaked going down to the parts shed.

Me again.
The 56-57 and the 58-62 A7/10's and the 62-65 A65's share the same nut 42-6077 11/16 20tpi.
Cheers

Musy so many thanks for this kindness...ok my  42-4320 is not flush with thdread to the end. There is at least   3/16 turned "nose" that is a smaller od than 11/16ths..... and this is not entering into the dummy spindle after the last thread. In fact, the thread depth of the dummy spindle compared to the axle is about 5/16ths longer.

There is a small step in the dummy at the end of the thread, and it's there the "nose" of the  axle is  getting stopped.

So I reckon either  cutting off the axle "nose" so its a straight thread, then a good thick 11/16thg washer, and I will be there!

Good to know, without your help I would have been puzzling for a day or two.

I'm thinking you have the wrong fixed spindle.

Dont know if you have resolved the problem but it is easy for the parts for full width rear hub A7/A10 to get mixed up with those for the full width rear hub A50/A65.

The A65 swinging arm is just over 9 1/2 inches between fork ends while the A10 is a fraction over 7 inches. Both the A65 spindles and the end spacers are longer than the A10 items. The threads are the same.

Your sprocket side spindle does not look right, too much thread.

My A10 main spindle is approx 6.8 inches from under head to end and the short spindle approx 3.18 end to end.

Thank you Julian S... what is strange about my short spindle is, the nut size is 5/8 x 18 TPI and not 11/16ths 20TPI BSC!

I am therefore suspecting it is an A50/A65 spindle and it is 3.24 long. Mt supplied long spindle is 7 inches, not 6.8 inches. It appears I need to  turn down  my long spindle and that will be the solution. I can live with the short spindle and have a nut for it.

Thanks
