Phu(k GB.
Never seen one that bad. Throw the old ones back in, they looked OK, but use the whole set.
This makes me wonder about the tappet adjuster issue you had.
Obviously you'll have to drop the sump plate and douse the crankcase to get rid of any debris.
Cheers

hi guys, G.B. this certainly puts SRM`s reputation in a very bad light we will have to think twice when buying spares as SRM have always been the top go too supplier, cheers

I've almost got the engine back together. I've used three of SRM's followers as they don't have undue wear and the best one from the Feked set that I bought in June. The magnetic sump plug and the strainer didn't show any debris. I'll get the bike completed tomorrow and see how the engine sounds. I've set the tappets to the recommended 10 & 16 thou.

Don't you have a 356 cam?
Clearances you used are for the 334.

Ah, ok, lucky I have not yet put the tappet covers on. Thanks. Should be both 8 thou, same as the Road Rocket?

Maybe .008 & .010 as was done in later years.
If it sounds too rattly you could close them up a little.

The followers I got from SRM did not look like that at all.

These were nicely ground, stellite pads on them, and laser etched with the SRM logo. They came soaked in oil in a heavy plastic bag.

You could tell they took pride in the product.

The finish on the followers you have there looks just as bad as the ones you first got from Feked- belt sander machinist quality.

It will be interesting to hear what SRM has to say about this, and what they will do to help you out here.

GB,

Must agree with Lee. They look so much like the old ones that I wondered if you had accidentally grabbed the old ones during reassembly. I say this with the hope that I haven't insulted a friend. Somehow, I can't imagine that the markings on the sidewalls of those followers were caused by the follower bores in the block. Those markings certainly don't look like oil starvation, where you would expect stresks. As always, others may/do know better.

AH yes, difficult to suggest anyone other than one self, would make similar mistakes to our own (cause I'm hoping it not just me)

But if so the SRM ones would still be around - yes
All the best - Bill
1961 Flash - stock, reliable, steady, fantastic for shopping
1959 Rocket Gold Flash - blinged and tarted up  would have seizure if taken to  Tesco

Going for a ride now...

Later...
Engine hot, following a 20 mile ride. I can hear a tappet on the timing side but I'm not worried about that.

Hoorah. Sounds good to me. Not that i'm an expert in any way. Will be interesting to hear other's thoughts. Look forward to hearing of it's performance on the DGR. If i post the sound of mine i'll be kicked off the forum for abuse!

Would anyone disagree that Greybeard is the most tenacious and dedicated repairer here? (...and damn fast, too.)

Yep - you've no idea the grief I had with every aspect of restoring my GF. What wasn't worn out was broken, bent or butchered by previous owners. And when one is not familiar with that particular model, it's difficult to know what goes where and how. You rebuild something the way it came apart only to find it was wrong before you started. But then I guess that has happened to many of us. I had so much hassle with mine that on more than one occassion I seriously considered parting it out. Wish a dodgy cam follower had been my only problem!

G'day GB.
Sounds great mate. Just one tappet. The exhaust pulses sound pretty close. Ready for the DGR.
You deserve a medal  *wink2* *yeah*
