GB, Hawkshaw's offering looks to be a dead ringer for your SRM followers, the price level is also more than coincidence. Interesting that their description references recently seen inferior, worn followers. Makes you think.. there can't be too many of those about!

If I were in business selling parts , this is one Forum I would view on a twice daily basis. Maybe that explains it.

Pete, I will be checking mine. Thanks.

Yes, they look like the same animal. I've sent Hawkshaw a message asking for the length.

Hi GB, if you consider buying a new set, have a chat with Andy from Priory magnetos first. He lists  them at £92,50.
I have a set from him in the SA for about 2 years now. Haven’t taken the barrels off since to see if there was any trace of wear but I recently checked the tappet gaps and they hadn’t moved even a bit from how I originally set them.

My new camshaft came from Andrew. He is a great bloke.

hello Mr greybeard this is what I came up with, the inner spring has no effect because with both keepers held with springs in position in your hand it rattles about. I am 99point 9 percent that everything is the same as my valve set up so here goes, I can't help with fully compressed  position because the cam bushes are out but I have just done this.. VALVE 99.74mm long ----top keeper 10 mm thick..----bottom keeper 5.5 mm thick..----OUTER spring 48mm long free length..----collets 7mm long..---top of valve to where collets sit 7.7mm ..----compressed spring in head ..- gap between first full coil 2.9mm ..-- second gap3.30 mm..--- third gap 3.3 mm..--- fourth gap 2.90mm , hope this can be of help *dunno*
Hi Berger,
I'm in the shed. My measurements are not much different to yours.
All in mm
Valve length = 99.45 overall.
Top collar, where the collet sits = 7.3.
Bottom collar 5.5 thick overall.
Collet is 7.76 deep.
Outer spring, free length = 46.6.
Valve tip to top of collet rebate = 7.8.
When fitted in the head the valve springs have an average gap of about 3.
When fully compressed in the vice the outer spring measures 23. This is obviously much shorter than when fully compressed by the camshaft.
The possible range of movement for the valve is about 9.5. This is the measurement between the top of the valve guide and the bottom of a collet.

All of the above was measured on the drive-side Inlet valve, the one that's playing up.

After reading your posts have used my compressed old springs rather than the new ones supplied when i had my head re guided and new valves. Have also had the cam bushes re done and want to protect them during the running in. How worn out/compressed are your original springs?

I looked but did not find the old springs.

Andrew Guttman, (Priory Magnetos etc) had a conversation with an old motor engineer chap who thought the springs that Andrew was putting on his engine seemed very strong. Andrew wondered if my excessive wear might be due to this issue. Any thoughts on that? My current springs were bought last year from C&D Autos.

GB
I did think the spring wire looked a bit chunky compared to other springs, plus the short cut off rather than the more usual ground ends, just does not look right.

Maybe a set of used springs from somewhere?  I am sure that the spring strength is only critical in limiting ultimate top speed, so unless you are going ride very lively, used should do.

The springs supplied by SRM to me look exactly like yours and i think they are the standard for all suppliers at mo. They just looked a bit fierce compared to my old ones, which are much shorter due to there years in compression. I would guess that there is a risk that they could release a pushrod if i give it too much stick. I preferred this risk over follower and cam wear? Will take a look through my spares tomorrow and see if i have any others. If 55 A10 springs can go in a plunger will be happy to post to you if you want to see how they look.
