Noise when on sidestand
« on: 13.09. 2018 20:01 »
Hello,

I have made a strange and alarming observation on my RR: on the mainstand at idle the bike sounds great, but when on the sidestand at idle I have a noise, not a rattle but rather a grumble. The primary chain is fine, and the clutch can't be wiggled either. Any suggestions?

G'day Otto.
Could be harmonics playing tricks on you. A vibe in the fuel tank, oil tank, tool box, mud guards.
In the motor it could be a drive side main bearing. Check for end float or up and down movement.

You could try getting over or under that frequency by turning the idle speed up or down and seeing if the noise goes away, improves, or stays the same.

you hear "grumbling" you havent got the side stand on your next door neighbours foot have you?? sorry couldnt help it
if its a deep sounding noise then as others have said take look/listen to the crank and bearings ,if it is more of a rattle could be as simple as the gear box not being fully in neutral mine does this sometimes ,you going to have to investigate this one i'm afraid mate, too risky to ignore ,hope its something simple cheers

Crank web rubbing on one (or more) primary case front screws?
Undo them a turn or two and see if the rumble goes away

And that ^^^ would indicate end float problem.

Thanks all, yesterday I took a screwdriver to various parts of the engine, but everything sounded fine. Today I went for a longer trip, and it was back with a vengeance. Couldn't envestigate further in order not to enfuriate the neighbours. Sounds like it comes from the primary transmission, so will start by taking off the cover to what's what. I have of course fears of end float problems, but have dismissed them as unlikely, as the entire bottom end was done very thoroughly by the best place n the country only a few 1000 km's ago.

Some years ago, after returning home on my A65, I stopped at the end of the driveway pick up my mail.  I left the bike running, and just leaned it over on the side stand. (I almost always use the center stand, but was feeling lazy that day.)  Immediately, there was a terrible screeching sound!  Upon investigation, I found a that the timing pointer inside the primary cover had scribed a perfect circle on the alternator rotor.  The crank endplay was that much!  If that hadn't happened, I'm sure I would have continued happily riding that bike until a rod came through the case.  Of course there's no timing pointer on an A10, but I agree that the bike is trying to tell you something.
