favourite bike?
« on: 09.09. 2018 19:47 »
Out of your current bikes, which is your favourite?
Apologies if this topic has been debated before (which surely it has?) but a quick search of the site didn’t turn up what I had in mind. So here goes …

I’m only addressing current bikes, as otherwise this could take a while ….
My DOT is no longer on the road. I restored it, and then my son rode it. Now it looks like an old field bike. Anyway, it’s top speed is only around 45mph and it vibrates sufficiently to be annoying. When I rebuilt the engine I converted the crank to full circle but, not knowing the factory balance figure, didn’t compensate for that. As it's no longer on the road I can’t be bothered now to strip it again and start adding lead plugs.
My B31 was bought around 1965 for hill-climbing. Stripped down, with suitable mods and a well tuned engine it won me several trophies. Later, when riding in historic class I was up against 500’s and so built an M33 engine for it. As it’s road registered I tested it on the road before stripping it back again. My son now races it.
The Weslake is a sprint bike. Vibration is the key word here. Will have to start another topic on that problem.
Which leaves me with my three road-going bikes. First, the Honda Firestorm. Engine is fantastic – over 100bhp of sheer grunt without so much as a tingle of vibration anywhere. Frame handles fairly well, though it wants to run wide when powering out of a corner. Brakes are good – will lift the rear wheel. Riding not so good. Bike is over 400lbs and top heavy. Wants to fall down in slow corners, and the position is uncomfortable – after half an hour on it I can’t walk.
Which leaves me with my ’58 Flash and ’49 M21 with the vee twin engine. Difficult to decide between them. Comfort goes to the Flash – the M21 rigid rear is not great on today’s rubbish roads. Brakes – the 8” tls on the M21 will bottom the forks, whereas the only way you could do an emergency stop on the Flash is by crashing it. Power – the M21 has the edge, and it is smoother. Slight vibration starts around 5,000 but not so bad you couldn’t stay there for a while. And who wants to ride at 100 for an hour? The Flash is smooth until around 3,000, when vibration starts - unpleasant enough that you wouldn’t want to stay there long and, revving it as high as I dare (alloy conrods are a liability) I couldn’t ride through it. I’d guess 7,000 at least before it would go away. The Flash starts first kick, whereas the M21 usually needs three – and anyone under sixteen stone need not try. So which do I prefer? Probably the Flash for a pootle around, the M21 for a bit more speed and the Firestorm if I’m in a hurry or need to cover some distance.

'49 B31, '49 M21, '53 DOT, '58 Flash, '62 Flash special, '00 Firestorm, Weslake sprint bike.

I only have one motorbike; my 1955 Sprung Frame Golden Flash, so I'll nominate that. I have a cranky old bicycle as well but the Beeza is my favourite.

I have one running bike, the '55 swingarm A10. So it's my favorite. When the '57 A7 is done (in 40 or 50 years) I'll reassess.

Now, here's my gripe. If you are going to start a topic called "Favourite Bike," you have to pick one. Lie if you must, the other bikes won't be offended and we won't know that you can't decide.

Actually quite an easy question to answer. There's the Norton I bought just after my 18th birthday. Hardly used these days. There's my wife's A10. Not mine so it doesn't count. There's the Velo MSS which is at last a joy. But when the chips are down, it's the Star Twin my wife bought for me back in 1976 and is still the bike of choice today.

I've had many bikes over many years, from a Suzy Step-Thru to a GS 1000, and from a '36 Velo to an Indian Chief....I'm still awaiting a "favourite bike!

G'day fellas.
My 51 plunger A7 takes the prize of favourite, had her on the road for 37 years and will stay with me till I take the highway to hell. But I luv all of them. The Cafe A10RR+ for short blasts, 83 CB1100F for long quick (scare the tintop drivers, out run the cops) blasts, 76 XT500 to get down and dirty and the little 77 AG175 to put around the local bush.
Cheers

When I feel the need for speed (80MPH will do thank you Sir) it's the SA
For the more civilised drive it's the plunger

Rex and Morris do not agree with me. *smile* That's fine. Protest in your own way.  *smile*

So, your wife asks you,  "Who's your favorite woman?" In  Morris' answer substitute "Fifi" for "SA" and "you, Dear" for "plunger" (maybe  ;)) and see how it goes.

Ok Richard, if you really want to know, it's the plunger.
But I'm only saying that because I don't want an argument with my beloved other half...  ;)

I totally would have kept my mouth shut (well, maybe) if the topic was titled "Under what conditions do you like each of your bikes?", but it's not.

Just having some fun with words.

Lawnmoverman - was covered recently in another post. Can't recall the title as the moderator moved it. Here's the pic again anyway. Front brake has been changed to 8" with tls backplate since that pic was taken. Still looks the same today otherwise, so no point in a fresh pic. BTW, it's geared for 120 at around 5500 but haven't tried that far - I like to keep my licence!

Favorite bike? Whichever one I'm riding. Just call me fickle. As I just got it on the road (took about 2 years) I guess I'm having the most fun with the Velo Venom at this time, but I'm not giving up any of the others.
