I was searching for a primary sliding plate, came across this one with integrated oil seal and wondering if anyone has used it with success and or know the company who makes it?

Gold Star specialist Dave Flintoff lists similiar and a neoprene disc to replace the felt disc fitted between the plate and chaincase. not used one just use a felt washer on back of clutch centre adaptor which works ok and is much cheaper.

Using a plain garter seal, as the Baxter Cycle item, would need a modification to the centre adaptor so that the scroll on it does not bear on the seal and tear it up.

The Flintoff item also looks like it would need a different adaptor than the standard one.

Does it require any modifications? Or does it simply replace the felt washer?

Know of where I can get one from? UK, USA, Aus it doesn’t matter.

My 1960 Gold Flash did not need modifying . He does include instructions how to fit it.

A smaller felt washer can be fitted between the 4 spring adaptor and sliding plate to stop oil leaking through. SRM supply them.

Don't put oil in your chaincase and it won't leak. Just oil the chain now and then and boil in grease every 3 - 5 thousand miles. Works for me.

Mine does not leak oil, does not slip and I dont have to boil the chain.

Julian and Berger - you guys must be lucky. The BSA clutch is a dry clutch (a wet one would be cork or bronze plates) and when used wet it is bound to have problems. After years of having clutches that either won't free properly, drag or slip (dozens of bikes over 50+ years) I stopped putting oil in chaincases. The worst was a Triton, where I had to take the clutch apart every couple of days to wash the plates in petrol, otherwise it slipped just enough so kickstarting it would lose its bite over compression, and starting was nigh impossible. Arrrggggh. Not that much oil usually stays in primary cases anyway - try getting a Velocette chaincase oil tight. Why bother with all that hassle when it's not necessary? Just a squirt with an oil can every thousand miles and then grease it at the same time as doing the rear chain. I take my chains off, thoroughly clean and boil in grease. Only way to get the lubrication where it's needed - inside the chain.

Phil Pearson supplies an identical looking plate with his electric starter but as Julian S says " the carrier has to be modified " and its bl..dy hard stuff !!

yes RD fella but my old original clutch is all cork , the clutch has a cover to help keep the chain lube out .I don't know which type of cork they used as there's many and as I understand it some types don't mind a bit of oil when it gets in there, edit. some cork clutches run in oil

berger - I agree. Cork plates grip well in oil and tend not to stick / drag. In fact they are likely to fail if not in oil.  But the problem is that most of our clutch plates are not cork and tend to stick when contaminated. They are meant to be dry but run in a wet environment, which is far from ideal. I think it was the semi-unit (and some singles) that had a clutch cover designed to keep oil out as much as possible. One reason why folks like belt drives is that the clutch slip / drag issue is overcome.
