Am i the only one who has done lots of miles with never a strap? Have fitted an Indian tank (gulp) and am now nervous. Looks like I'll be being creative next time i get the tank off. I suppose a massive, superstrong elastic band is not suitable?(joke)
Hi Jamie

I have an Indian tank and the PO never fitted the strap - although he never rode it after restoring it. The first one to ride it on the road was me and I soon noticed a serious vibration (rattle) from the tank especially when full.
There were no rubber buffers fitted either.
The problem with my Indian tank was that the tunnel was wider than standard so the buffers were not long enough and did not secure the tank. I also found after ordering a new tank strap that the studs were further apart than standard so I made a new strap to suit.
That improved matters but it was still not right.
I ended up by padding out the frame tube by using a couple of pieces of 2 1/2" radiator hose split along its length and taped on. Also a piece of foam rubber taped over the rubber buffers.
It seems to have done the trick and there is no loud vibration at about 2500 - 3000 RPM.
I would definitely not use your bike without the strap of the tank will split in no time flat.

Hi Guy,
Looking at the photo you posted it looks like the tank buffer rubbers are missing  *????* *????*

these fit into the gadget with the round holes above the tank strap

There are couple of tank rubbers just above the thing your describing, although I see you point. My tank doesn't vibrate when riding..as far as I can tell anyway. I'll take a picture next time I take the tank off and show you what's there...

G'day BJ.
I made one from 1" x 1/4" alloy (I luv alloy) and slotted the holes so I only need to loosen the nuts. Does that tell you how often I have the tank off  *ex*

Hi Jim(lawnmowerman). Yes to copious amounts of padding under and to the side of Indian tank which is looser than original on mine but not by much. Have never had a problem with vibration though, my tank feels nicely isolated from engine vibe. I managed to get some tough plasticated foam(?) sheet from a building site years ago. This was used in the expansion joints of huge concrete slabs and has been used on many places on the bike. I will fit a strap at some point, like the idea of Muskrats slot.

Its that silly centre bolt fastening that causes the issue. Why the hell the design brains at BSA didnt simply locate the tank on the two rubber buffers at the front and tie it down at the back with an elastic strap like the Italian bikes do has got me guessing.
