The idea being that you remove the cotter key?

It's beautiful work. I assume you lathe-turned the threads yourself. Which thread profile did you use? I guess that means, "to what angle did you grind the tool?" I haven't run a lathe in over 35 years and I could basically turn diameters (making loudspeakers) and that was about it.

Knurling was the worst, always hated having to do that. Seemed to be some sort of black art with a good deal of random factors involved.

Thread turning was my favourite. I remember at Tech we had to do a twin start square thread but didn't have a nut to try. The teacher had the test nut. Mine got 98%. I made a few extras for other students and charged them a box of beer each. I've still got it in the shed.

Beer don't last long around here, not even 40 years ago.
Found it, bit rusty. 95% stamped on the end so my memory is only 3% out
