There is so much helpful info being shared on here it is a fantastic resource.

Is there a way to save links to threads for reference, almost like flagging favourites, on the forum itself?

Currently when I see something that might come in handy I copy and paste the URL into a Word doc. also with key search terms for back up but this is a bit clunky!

This one is certainly going into the collection, thanks guys.  *thanks*

Trev.   Yes, of course you are correct, the ensemble ( pole piece and body) is the receptacle of residual magnetism.  So an old field coil, body and pole piece still in place after all these years retaining some residual magnetism is what I meant.  You missed the true weasel word. While not a true porky, explaining why the new field coil needs a little help to settle to its new surroundings and qualifying the overall statement as drivel for purists,  Mosin has a working dynamo and a better understanding of why the unit failed to work despite new components and correct assembly.

"Do this, this and this" is all fine and dandy, but the reasons behind why things happen and a quick overview of basic electrics goes a long way to sorting these conundrums in such cases.

Not knowing Forum Members abilities, knowledge and skills makes the level to pitch these solutions all the more difficult. Great for newbies, old news, done to death for us oldies.

Good ruse there from MrG. for ones reluctant to wake from slumber. Well worth a go to save major work.

 Swarfy.

Being at home again and on a proper keyboard, thought I'd add the 'nudge' schematic I referred to earlier to encourage sleepy dyns to get up and go.
Some people may find it useful, and I'm half-inclined to build it in on rewires going forwards. On the Sod's Law basis that if you have it you won't ever need it  . . . but if you haven't, the bloody thing won't kick in, some dark and stormy night.

An Ariel thing from 1954, so memory served for once.

By the by, just hauled self and memsahib round half of Europe (well, a lot of France and complete circuit almost of Spain, 6000 km by car between 14th and today), and wasn't asked even once for proof of vaccination. Couple of places wanted email or other means of tracing, and hotels have you by the short and curlies anyway if you use bank cards and provide mobile #s, but except the fact that some hotel bars and restaurants were closed (ones we wanted to go to certainly weren't!), it was a piece of the proverbial and we felt welcome every place we went.
Can do without 45°C personally, being an overweight pile of lard, but comes with the territory this time of year in parts of Spain so can hardly grumble, no-one made us go there!
Using minor roads over the Pyrenees we encountered no border checks, no-one even there. Felt hard done by in a weird kind of way, trundling along waiting to be stopped and  asked for passports, vax papers, post-Brexit French residence permits, etc etc. But, same as with the 'nudge' circuit, had we not had 'em, we'd have been 'had', sure as god made little apples!

Nice one, Groily.  But is it safe to use on an electronic regulator?

Regards.
Tim.

Another way to set up a "nudge" circuit is to fit a switch connected to ammeter then to low wattage light then to the "D" terminal or somewhere in the circuit.
This will then give a "charge" indicator, illuminated when the generator is not up to battery voltage.

Used the same idea on a Guzzi T3 which was reluctant to start charging. Had never thought of using it on a dynamo though.

You're saying you did it on an alternator-equipped bike? How does that work then?

The field is created by an electro-magnet I guess, which needs tickling via an 'excitation' wire to get it going - just like a dynamo's does - so it's a similar story.

However, you couldn't nudge a permanent magnet typical brit-bike job like this, 'tis true!
