Insurance discount-no thanks

Talked to my auto insurance agent the other day to drop a car from my policy. She said there is a 10% discount for people with smart phones. Told her I didn't have one but my wife does so tell me more. Well, it turns out they use the gps function to track where you go and monitor your speed so if you drive too fast your rates go up. When I stopped laughing, I declined.

I've not heard of that over here. It's probably a psychological thing, designed to keep youngsters from speeding; the insurance company would not be able to monitor all their customers. Would they?

jachenback - so if you're in someone else's car, or on a train they assume you're in your car? Suppose they'd cancel my insurance when I took the boat out ....

Emergency accident/breakdown system works on GPS so it's needed.

Driving to fast ?? - simples - drive within the legal limits, most roads around here are either too bendy,hilly or pot holed to allow much else

Insideous creep of data gathering. We have a South African import insurance company here that offers you "wonderful discounts" for providing information about how you store your vehicle and how far and where you comute.  Seems to me it is simply offering an insurance compay a legal argument against paying out. They set the premium, ill pay it and they can payout wherever and whenever I have an issue. As for the rest that is my business.

I have that kind of  insurance on my car in Sweden. I just had to download an app to my Iphone and turn it on when driving.
To keep the low price insurance I have to register (turn on the app when driving) 500 kilometres every 6 month.

I just turn it on for 500 kilometres and not more.
So far I got a nice discount on my insurance.

Insurance has always been a legal protection racket, it just gets worse, and our dumb apathy lets them get away with it.
We live in 'free countries'? - Joke!

 Same here (in theory) apart from the compulsory Third party personal, which is fair enough,mind you though we also stitched up with that because I pay that on four/5 vehicles (two bikes and two utes and a van), and I can only use one of anything at a  time....
