Wanted: Front mudguard stay NOW FOUND
« on: 29.01. 2019 23:42 »
Needed urgently for rebuild of a friend's bike: 67-6544 front mudguard stay (the one right at the front) to replace one which I mistakenly thought would do - it doesn't since its been shortened and I only now realise it after trying to make it fit a correct mudguard from another bike! I'm at a late stage in the build so in a hurry now. Your price paid. Thanks, Steve

Keith,
If I've understood your requirement: I just went and had a look at mine. The front mudguard stay is a loop made from 1/2" OD tube. The part under the guard is flattened, also the bolted ends. If I needed one of those I would make it from stock tubing.

Thats right Ian, I was just hoping someone might have the finished item to save me some time and trouble. Flattening the ends correectly is a bit of an art form, and that stay is very visible, stuck where it is right at the front of the bike.

Thanks for the thought anyway.

Hi All,
When I have made this type of stay in order to get the flattened parts even on both sides, I make the stay in two halves
Make the flattened section over length
Its easier to shape the curved section  in two parts like this,
Cut the flattened /curved parts to length, then weld them together
Add a sleeve to the fork ends of the tube
so you get a thicker, stronger part to drill through

I usually make the flat mudguard section from flat strip, then the stays from tube with the ends flattened in a two-part jig in the vice. It leaves the tubing with a semi-circular end to the round section and approximates the look of the original. I prefer to use a nut and screw to hold the parts together. All stock tubing etc available cheaply from good old B&Q.

  *doubt* *doubt* *doubt*

So going back to the original post, is it not possible to 're-lengthen' the newly acquired 'wrong' ones if they are  otherwise the same profile ?
I mean with some kind of a spigot inside ?

I do have one but it has a couple of kinks in the round tube part.

Is it a genuine BSA item? Can you send me a pic?
