Wanted: Front mudguard for 61' A10 SR.
« on: 30.01. 2019 03:53 »
Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a front mudguard for my 61' Super Rocket. I believe it's the deep valanced type and is part number: 42-6553.

From some research, it appears these are quite difficult to come by. Does anyone have suggestions as to who might have one or make them? I'm in the US, so I'm unaware of most of the UK suppliers outside the large ones.

Thanks,

Andrew

Best of luck, non here in the UK manufacturing or fron the usual suppliers apart from the odd one on Ebay now and again but these will be from broken bikes.
You might have to try India for reproduction and be prepared to rework and final finish.

Try Chris Williams at Autocycle Engineering 01384 253030. He makes his own mudguards with the original tooling. I have had 2 from him and they were spot on.

Thanks guys,

That gives me some good leads. I've e-mailed Autocycle so we will see what he says.

Brett, let me think about it for a bit and I'll get back to you. With very few chrome plating services around here anymore, I'd have to add that cost in as well.

Thanks.

I have front and rear originals from either '61 or '62. Can't remember which for sure. PM if interested and I can get pictures later today or tomorrow. Have the brackets as well. I'm just south of Boise, Idaho.

PM sent... I think? I haven't sent many messages on here and I don't see it under "sent." Yes, definitely interested.

I received a reply from "CW" at Autocycle. They said the tooling was scrapped in 1977 and cannot make the mudguard.

I tried Autocycle 6 yrs ago and they could only offer Goldie type guards.

I was in the same boat as you for awhile, took me a few years to find both front and rear mudguards.

Ended up with a US spec rear Mudguard off of eBay, does need work and is solid.
Front one I went to Wes Scott Cycles here in Fort Lauderdale, ended up chatting to him for a few hours, thought I’d ask and ended up purchasing a NOS front Mudguard. Chrome is perfect (can see my reflection) but will have to rechrome it due to the holes for number plate I don’t want in it.

Keep looking and they will show up eventually. Last year there was a UK spec chrome set with stays that was on eBay, the seller swapped them out for Goldie ones and wanted £200 for the pair. Wanted to buy them but was too late.

A quick search, I found these but he’s asking for too much for the set of UK specs.

I'd like to replace the non-standard front mudguard on my '61 Super Rocket with the correct valanced type.  There is an original one in good condition available on eBay right now, but it's nearly three times the price of an Indian reproduction.  I know the modern reproduction will not have the same level of fit and finish as the original , but I'm OK with that for the sake of my budget.  Before I take the plunge on the reproduction, there is one detail that looks like it could pose a problem.  Looking closely at the tabs that connect the mudguard to the central Y-shaped brackets, the front and rear tabs on the original appear to be of unequal length, while those on the reproduction appear to be the same length.  Is this correct, or just a trick of the camera?  I'd appreciate feedback from anyone who has direct experience with these mudguards. If I have to have someone modify the tabs, the cost difference between the reproduction and the original could become much smaller.

Original mudguards are hard to find, here's one in the UK for sale on preloved site which shows  bracket mounting tabs equal, which I think is correct.

Photo is an old mudguard previously fitted to my A10. Front to the left.

The tabs do appear unequal lengths on my mudguard, longer to the front.
