BSA 250 Roundtank frame WTB
« on: 21.03. 2019 23:14 »
My good mate Jacko has an engine, 'box, mag, carb, tank etc from a BSA 'Roundtank'.
It's all in excellent condition, BUT! He needs a frame for it, (forks and hubs too, but frame is the important thing initially).
I know this ad is a longshot, but it's a shame if this didn't get built into a bike.
If anyone has any leads please PM me.

A long shot but the questions asked by “users” on this auction indicate there are some spares for early bikes around in nz...... https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1973103094&archive=1

Only way to get in touch with Trademe users is to ask a question on another auction (assuming they have one now, or in the future)

Might be worth a try mate, Jacko's a kiwi too so he could always slip a frame into his luggage next trip back home.
Not.

I'll check out TradeMe.

There’s a pile of early frames Jools, can you find out some frame numbers to help in the search thanks

Thanks mate, obviously Jacko doesn't have a frame, so no frame numbers, -I'll try a search to see what would be suitable.
(Jacko's not totally web oriented).
Cheers,
Jools

From the BSA Club dating site (no, not that!), I get the following:
Example, a 1924 2.49hp 'Standard' (which would be a Roundtank) has eng no B9400 and Frame no BR9400.
Jacko's engine number is B5655.
Whether that helps much I'm not sure. Perhaps we're looking for a frame prefix 'BR'.
But there's a 1924 Roundtank on the web with eng no B12650 and frame no B12252. No BR prefix. (?)
I would think that the frame toptube might have distinctive mounting points for the round tank?
Cheers Tomcat.

Hi All,
The top tube on the round tank is plain to the best of my knowledge
There are simple band clips holding the tank
From memory I think the 3 speed box came in for 1925
There's a round tank bike stuck in the back of my brothers shed if anyone needs measurements or details checking

Pre 1930 numbers appear in the 1929 Book of the BSA by Waysider.

The scans may be of interest

The pre 1930 numbers can be difficult because many factory records are missing.

Thanks to both of you. Whilst the numbers aren't conclusive, they point in the right direction.
BTW it's a 2-speed 'box (albeit nicely made!)
John, if anything comes up it might be useful to have one to compare.
Cheers.

I think the round tank of 1924/25 had a single top tube with mounting points on the top to take a tyre pump, illustration below, from 1925 parts book shows sketch of the round tank frame 27 5595 at the top.
