Cam Shaft Shims ?

Hi,

Bolted my cases together today with the CAM (334) inplace, with the drive gear bolted on there was around .55mm / .024 " end play, where does one shim this out ?.

Which bush do you shim ?.

Don't shim any bushes.
The cork washer on the breather inside the timeing case should be the correct thickness to take up the endfloat. When I got my last complete gasket set, there were corks of three different thicknesses supplied, so you could use the appropriate one - not too thick, not too thin. Give it a good soak in oil overnight to allow for any swelling.
The way I did it was to get the cam and pinion in place and try the different corks, taking up the endplay but not using a cork so thick that you can't turn the camshaft by hand. When happy, replace the idler gear, time the engine and reassemble the inner timing case.

G'day Josh,
               John is right about the corks, but if you feel it needs to be shimmed they would have to go behind the bush. Eg warm the case in oven to 150 C push bush out, place required shim over bush behind the flange and replace bush. Any shim placed between cam and bush will wear very quickly.

Am in agreement about the cork washer holding a "pretension" on the cam, i.e. no actual end play, I am interested to know where Haynes pulled the .004 figure from ?.

There are several mistakes in the haynes manual, they just make it up as they go along.

Ignore that one, as has been said the cork washer is where the play is taken up.
