Earlier this year I fitted. A brand new 4 spring Triumph type clutch to my dbd. Filled the case with oil, more than usual because I also fitted a Pearson starter kit. For various reasons the bike has not been started for some months but when started yesterday the clutch wouldn't free. When stripped, three pairs of plates were " glued" together, clean metal with no signs of rust. Should I have wiped the plates with oil on assembly? Would it be residue from the manufacturing process? The plain plates were cleaned prior to fitting

Wash plates with petrol to clean residue off. Give them a fine coat of chosen oil and refit. Loads of threads on this in the archives on this Forum.

Thanks for the reply. That seems to be the problem, the steel plates were clean and dry after pulling them apart. I was thinking perhaps an adhesive used to bond the friction material might still be on the driving plates requiring oil . Seems to the reverse of normal clutch problem of trying to keep oil out of the clutch

Thanks A10JWO, you were spot on. I left a pair of friction plates together overnight and they were stuck in the morning. Washing in petrol changed their colour so presumably there was some crap on them. In 60 yrs this is only the seccond bonded clutch I've bought. Always wash the steels but I've never knew the friction plates needed doing as well. Clutch is sweet now. Proves we're never too old to learn.
