Miles Per Gallon A10 Super Rocket
« on: 10.10. 2019 04:22 »
Took the 58 SR for a decent ride yesterday about 180 miles there and back.  At somewhere close to the 100 mile mark I refilled the tank and manage to squeeze in 9.2 litres or around 2 gallons. Even with my limit maths I can work that out at close to 50 mpg. The plugs are a nice mushroom brown and the bike is performing beautifully, tons of go and it was a very nice ride out in warm spring weather with  56 Velocette Venom as a riding mate. The Velo did the same journey using around 6.2ltrs which is over 60mpg. I dont begrudge 50 mpg ish. My Benelli 650 did similar and its a bigger heavier bike than the Velo. Interested to know what is considered a respectable mileage for Super Rocket. I know its a topic that brings out the crazies. I had a mate who swore black and blue that he could get in excess of 30mpg out of a Truimph 2.5TC where mine was reliably around 18-19mpg even with a feather boot. My brother also clains to have got 50mpg out of a sidevalve Morris Minor but as we say in NZ yeah nah. Best I managed to get was 26. I'm not talking economy run figures just a standard open road mileage. S:)

Our SR spec A10 gives just over 50 mpg, as does my Velo. Over the years I have noticed a reduction in miles per gallon on all machines. I have a friend who claims (and I do believe him) of 70 mpg from his A7 and T110. But to George, 40 mph is breathtakingly fast.
All down to present day petrol I suspect. Adding ethanol being the main culprit.

It is all going to depend upon the gearing and the twist of the wrist.
I used to get 15 kpl out of our diesel L300 mu partner got 10.
I can get around 40 out of the M20 but a flat mate was getting better than 50
Way too many variables.
A couple of PSI extra in the back tyre can add a mile or so as can a taller section tyre.
And lets not forget odometers with dementure.

For best fuel consumption, don't use the brakes.

While riding or driving, give it a try.

G'day fellas.
It all gets confusing converting liters per 100km to miles per gallon (proper gallon not that tiny US version  *smile*). 1 mile = 1.61km, 1 impgal = 4.546Lt.
I've never tested the BSA's but feel the A7 gives me about 60mpg = 4.7Lt/100km. The A7SS racer on methanol gave about 12mpg *eek*. My 1983 CB1100F if I'm gentle gets 37mpg and 28mpg if I'm having fun!
My Ford ute gets 14Lt/100km (20mpg), the wife's Magna gets 8Lt/100km (35mpg).
Cheers

My boat does around 1 mile to the gallon (diesel). Better than a chap I know (bigger boat) who does 6 gallons to the mile.

I get between 50 and 60 mpg out of my A10, which is about the same as what I get from my 400kg 1800 goldwing  *eek*

I get 60 to 70 mpg from my b31, when running in it did 80mpg but since then it’s been mercilessly thrashed  *smiley4*

Cheers all, seems that I'm not wildly out of the normal range then. It is interesting that 50 mpg or thereabouts seems to be about what it takes to pull a fully grown man at speed over sealed roads. I have a friend who on a trip to Australia borrowed a four cylinder Susuki 250 and rode it from Melbourne to Adelaide. He said it did pretty well reving at around 10,000 rpm and crusing at 110 to 130 kmph. It returned 50 mpg (imp) the same as the milage on his 864cc Ducati Darmah. The SR may get a bit more fettling but I'm generally very pleased with the performance and handling. Also honour was satisfied when I managed to overhaul the Venom up the long steep,Bombay Hills heading back into Auckland.
