Steering damper bottom nut

Has anyone had problems fitting the steering damper bottom yolk splined nut, there must be one out there manufactured to the correct dimensions. I've recently purchased a new old stock bottom yolk for my RGS which required a steering damper bottom nut fitting. Having  purchased one, I've been going down the route of filing the splines and OD to try and make it fit. Also I'm not sure if the nut is a push fit into the bottom tube or has it got to be knocked in,?. I'd be grateful for any advice and if anyone could tell me of a supplier that has these nuts that actually fit.

Howard, they can be little devils. The design would indicate the splines fit like a glove, but sadly with the standard of pattern parts available, this is what you get. Ideally it should slide into the yoke with no slop, but a bit of slack on the splines is of no real consequence.  Your NOS Yoke may be a factory second, re-emerging to the market as prices rise.  Your options are to get hold of a genuine nut, see if that fits. Or get out the faithful Dremel and hand carve your new nut to fit. Don't amend the yoke, just in case it is made to spec.

Thanks for the info Swarfy.  This one small job has been doing my head in, i've been filing the nut splines then fixed it to a 26TPI screw in my drill and have been turning down the OD using a file, i was worried about how much material I was taking off as i wasn't even sure if it was a press fit or not, thanks again for your help...and I'll persevere.

A bit of trivia, the spline in the yoke is removable, it is a disc with a fine spline on the circumference.

Thanks Trev, this disc came out when I was removing the bottom nut from a damaged bottom yolk. I had to search for a replacement yolk as someone had previously filed down the shoulder for the bearing race on the stem tube.
