Dunno how they rode those things. I struggled with sandracing on BSA's - first a rigid then a SA Goldie. Terrible. Really hard work and difficult to keep a slide going. Changed to a Hagon J.A.P. and it was bliss. Guess it's mainly about wheelbase (the Hagon was ex grasstracker).

Flat trackers run a rear brake so as to 'back it in'.

Brakes were prohibited in flat track until the late 60’s. I believe 69 was the first year for brakes.

I have ridden brakeless...especially on ice, and you can “back it in” just fine with no brakes. You run it in harder and essentially brake with the front tire and let the back end come around. You know you are going fast when the front tire tucks in (turns left) going into the turn. Time for some throttle!

IIRC wall of death favorites were Indian Scouts and Long Stroke A7's.
