Halfords gasket cement any good
« on: 10.11. 2019 09:51 »
Anyone tried Halfords Granville Instant Gasket 40g at £5 a tube. It’s for the bottom of the barrels gasket.

Don't know it, but 'instant gasket' is normally silicone, so I'd avoid it. Blue Hylomar for me.

Wellseal every time for me - for everything apart from perhaps the pipe in the exhaust port.

Hylomar every time, Developed for gas turbine engines, I've been using it since the early 70's after a spell in the engine overhaul workshop at British airways during my apprentiship

Yes, silicone is best kept for bathrooms.  But I've never tried Hylomar for that.  Maybe... (only joking).

Right up there with the furry pink steering wheel gloves and other tawdry items that form the mainstay of their stock these days I would imagine.

Yamabond for me.

Interestingly the purveyors of Anything and Everything in the World still list our old standby Hermetite Red, with the proviso that it is unavailable for now.

Ever ones to jump in, Hylomar have a product, new to me,  Hylotite Red. Apart from the colour you have to play spot the difference to see how it differs from the well established Blue Version.

RTV in a tube has no advantage over good old silicone bathroom sealer, and both are OK in the right place on an engine, but the second time you come to use the RTV in a tube tube, there's a good chance it's gone solid. Using a small amount  of silicone to bed rocker gaskets allows you to assemble loosely, let it harden for a couple if days, then tighten down fully. Usually works where other sealers have failed , especially on bruised castings. Gets a bad reputation because folks use too much...a light smear is all you need, and removal is relatively easy.

 Swarfy.

Hylomar
particularly like it because it is insoluable in fuel but softens and wipes off with metho
makes future work a breeze.

Yamm/Honda/Suzuki & any other bond is near impossible to clean up when you have to fit the part again.

Can't comment on the product in question but gave up on 3Bond due to going off in the tube.... erroneously used Loctite ¿596 instead of 515 as suggested by my local Gutzzi guy, ( doesn't go off in tube) but I think does what I needed it to do
Started building in about 1977/8 a on average '52 A10 -built from bits 'n pieces never resto intended -maybe 'personalised'

I have not used any gasket sealer on any paper gaskets on both my bikes a 1963 A65 and a 1956 A7 for the last 4 years I only use a thin smear of grease on both sides and have not had any leaks from paper gaskets even though I have to date had the timing cover off on the A7 3 times and  still using the same gasket. I do make sure that the gasket surfaces are clean and flat. However I do have a slight oil leak on both bikes on the A65 it is coming from the speedo drive possibly the O ring will be attended to over the winter, the A7 has a leak from the rear of the primary suspect it is gear oil and leaking from the mainshaft hard to tell with a fully enclosed chaincase will also be looked at over the winter and may fit the SRM gearbox sprocket nut with oil seal will decide what course of action  when stripped down.
