cam followers

 Hello,

Does anyone know the exact radius that the cam followers are ground too? Mine show some wear, too much really, and need to be re-ground.

 Thank you,

I believe the radius is 1.25 inches (I measured new ones with an optical comparator several years ago), but I'm away from my shop notes right now. I'll be back tomorrow and post the value for you.

I think you will find that they are case hardened, and so you will have to build them up with stellite or re harden them.

Thank you guys,

Snow, I am finding this to be much more fun then any old V-8. Its still a little daunting because I am never too positive! *smile*

David, I look forward to what your notes say- and thank you for the help. If I am going to try and set this up, I want to make sure I get it right the first time. I am thinking slow speed grind, just plain water as coolant. I will catch the radius using the rotary table. I still have to come up with a jig that will hold it all after its clocked in.

Hi Goldy, yes I will have to re-harden them. For this I need to know about what they were sent from the factory at. I am pretty sure I can get close by heating them too color, then a quick dip in oil followed by a polish. Then I will have to wait until the wife is gone, they will go right into the kitchen oven for probably 2 hours to relieve the stress. Does anyone see any pitfalls to what I plan to do here?

 Thanks,
Lee

The foot radius is 1.250 inches and the hardness is 62 Rc.
About .010 inch can be ground away safely.
Use assembly lube at the cam/follower contact face, and change oil and filter often.
Good luck, Lee.
