Oil Pipes
« on: 23.04. 2019 22:54 »
Folks,

Does anyone know where I can find some of the spiral armour and swages that they made the oil pipes from? I want to make up some non-standard ones for an oil filter.
cheers

Hi Simon, I'm not sure what the spiral armour is but you can get 1/4" swagelock fittings on ebay.

P.S. Simon, what have you used for the flexible oil pipe connectors for the supply and return? I'm looking at replacing my old ones but I'm a bit unsure of the right spec. with regards temperature.

I pop into my local hydraulic hose company and got some oil lines made up to my specifications using tefflon linned stainless steel wrapped tube.
Not particularly cheap 35 years ago but hundreds of thousands of miles latter not a drop of oil from them, still flexible.
While I was there, he fitted slip fitting on both ends which makes them really easy to remove.

Stainless braided fuel hose is popular on boats. Some surveyors insist on it (fireproof - probably). I hate the stuff. Looks lovely outside but you have no idea what's going on under the shiny stuff. Seen a few hose failures that appeared fine visually. For boat fuel (diesel) privided the tank is below the engine I use clear nylon with compression fittings. You can see whats going on, especially if there's air in the system and, being non-gravity, in the event of a fire no fuel is lost to make things worse.
Back to motorcycles - for oil pipes I detest the flexible, reinforced nylon some use. Looks rubbish, turns yellow and goes hard. My preference is black oil-proof rubber hose as sold for fuel hose plus either tiny jubliee clips or, preferably, crimp clips.

I had mine made by this company in Plymouth last year: http://www.flexihose-ltd.co.uk/

Hose from pump return to bottom of filter, hose from 3/4 way up on filter to oil tank.

Cost me £25.00 for 2 hoses with fitted end fittings. When trying them on my bike I decided to change the routing of one of them and then it was too long. Went back to them and they shortened it with a new end fitting, while I waited, for FREE. I gave them £20 for their tea boat.

Told them it was for a BSA  *smile*

I didn't mean use the hoses ! Only the outer sheath over standard oil pipes.

I managed to use unmodified hoses with a filter, there is a short section of unsleeved hose involved, but hard to see, it’s not the neatest job but simple to do

That's what I thought you meant. Hope I didn't offend. Just figured the real armour would be obtainable.
