Wanted - Superflash valve top collars 67-0885
« on: 14.03. 2020 06:41 »
I know this is going to be a long shot but I need 2 valve top collars for my Superflash project, part number 67-0885. The Superflash uses the same valves as the later Road Rocket and Super Rocket but the top collar is different. The difference is that the cup the collets sit in is further down into the collar so allowing the collar to fit higher up the valve stem. Picture 1 shows a picture of the correct collar fitted to my exhaust valves and picture 2 shows the later one used on the RR and SR (67-0960). I have tried one of these but they compress the springs to much and would be coil bound in use. Iron head valves and collars are totally different.

Please let me know if you have a couple you could spare and willing to sell. Thank you.

G'day John.
I had similar problem when fitting SR valve gear to my A7SS head. I had to use the std collars with the SR collets. This meant machining the tapper in the collar to suit the slight difference in tapper of the collets. Sorry I cant remember the exact angle (notes got burnt with the house)  *pull hair out*.

Hi Musky,
Thanks for the reply. As I have 2 of the correct ones I was thinking I may have to go down the line of having 2 new ones made or getting the standard SR ones adapted. I don't have the kit or skill to do this myself so will have to ask a friend who has a lathe and probably could do.
Cheers, John

last year, due to a damaged alloy head and cost of replacement I fitted my SR engine with an iron head. Because I had a good set I fitted Road Rocket valves and used an Eddie Dow type top collar and Goldie type valve springs which had been on the SR head.

Fitted fine and gave the same spring fitted length as on the alloy head (1 5/16 inch) Works OK as well.

The conversion came from Ebor ;

https://eborbikes.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=56

Looking at an old master parts price list from 1962 the SF top collar 67 0885 is shown as "superseding spares No" 67 0960 the RR and SR part. The SF springs 67 0956 and 67 0957 are shown as "no longer available"

Not tried it, because I dont like the pattern SR spring quality, but does the SR top collar with SR springs fit the SF given the collets and spring seats are common?

Hi Julian, it was when I took the head apart that I noticed that it had the correct valves, springs, top collars and collets fitted to the exhaust valves but the inlet valves were standard iron head valves, springs, top collars and collets. I bought a new set of alloy head springs, assuming they would work, 67-0968 valves, 67-0960 top collars and 65-1624 collets. On assembly the exhaust valves look fine using the top collars that came with the bike as can be seen in the 1st picture but on fitting the inlet valves the springs are a lot more compressed due to the top collar being held further down the stem by the collets. Did not try on the bike but pretty sure they would be coil bound. If you look at the 2 pictures above where the arrows point you can see the column that the collets sit in is a lot taller on the SF collars so pushing it further down the stem. Picture 2 is not a new collar but an original one that somebody gave me to check that my new ones where correct.

Somebody has asked me if I am sure that the 2 top collars I have on the exhaust valves are correct and all I can say is I believe so. I have also looked at the Superflash project restoration pictures on Terry Parker's web site and the ones on his head look the same as mine, see picture below which is from his web site.

I did a little more digging around the internet last night and found that Baxters Cycle in the USA have a picture of what looks like the correct part on their web site. The slight confusing part is if you put in the part number I am looking for 67-0885 it comes up with a picture of the later top collar 67-0960 and a reference to that part number in the description.

https://www.baxtercycle.com/product/67-0885/

but if you then put in the part number 67-0960 it shows what I think is a picture of the correct top collar 67-0885.

https://www.baxtercycle.com/product/67-0960/

I have sent them a message asking if they have 2 of the correct ones but their contact page on their web site keeps saying 'Error' so I had to send it via their Facebook page. No reply yet. Might be lucky.
