Carburettor Studs in Cylinder Head

Hi Everybody,

The carburetter stud holes in in my 58 iron cylinder head go straight through into the cylinder inlet passages.  The studs would normally block these passages but one stud has a a one mill groove along its length that might provide an air bleed or whatever.
Has anybody seen this before?

Perhaps an old banjo bolt someone's cut the head off?

I cannot answer your question, sorry. On my Plungie, I have bolts, not studs. Means I can get the carb off without removing the cylinder head.

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for all that.  I suspect that at some point in the engines history somebody was indeed trying to deal with a blow-by/breather problem.  I have 3 rocker covers and one of them has been drilled and fitted with a pipe nipple.  None of this is going to be replicated in this new rebuild.  I have 2 questions.

Is it normal for the stud holes to break through into the inlet tracts?

Are bolts better than studs for the carburetter?  Neil's comment would appear to make a lot of sense but I've never had the engine in the frame as yet.

Yes they break through, it is quite usual.

Studs OK with a screw on air filter or bell mouth but if using the original type you need bolts. Space very limited to manouver carb over studs and connect to rubber hose/air filter.

The holes go through into the inlet tract on mine.
