No, not friction....it's true mechanical interference. The sequence of assembly is timing pinion, plain washer, oilpump worm, locking washer (tang towards crank), locknut. The tang of the lockwasher is trapped in the groove in the crank, so can't move. Tighten the worm, put on the locking washer, then add and tighten the locknut. Bend the edge of the lockwasher over a flat of the locknut.
Assemble with Loctite for belt and braces.
