Finned exhaust clamps - Are they necessary?

Here's a bit of random question... are finned exhaust clamps necessary? I've been running my BSA A10 without any for a few months now (I forgot to fit them when I installed new 2-into-1 exhausts). I'm just wondering whether they are purely aesthetic? or do they have a useful function?

I assume they assist with cooling the exhaust but, depending on the size of the fins; I'm a bit doubtful that they'd have a significant effect. What do you reckon? Thanks guys!

They probably do help a little with cooling but the main thing is that they look nice

I agree the main thing is they look nice, but not convenient to keep clean.

G'day owain.
They help cool the hottest part of the bike and help "reduce" bluing of the pipes.

That's the theory but the actual contact points between the finned clamp and exhaust pipe are minimal so close to zero heat transfer. The pipes are probably better cooled by the free airflow without them. But they look good.

I'd say anything that (may) help heat dissipation at that point is good :O)
& yes they look good.
