Crank pinion nut lock washer

Am I being a bit thick here, I just realised that I'd used the wrong lock washer on the crank nut, (inner cover catching the edge of the washer) so swapped it for the correct one (67 644). Now obviously the internal tang fits in the slot on the shaft, but does the tang slide inwards under the worm drive or outwards under the nut? And, how does this actually lock the nut anyway.
Just want to make sure it's right before moving on. The set of tab washers I ordered has no kind of instructions or part numbers with it and the ones that come off were either properly mangled, missing or just normal washers.

As the tang sits in a groove it does not really make much difference which way it goes on as long as it fits. I normally have mine under the worm gear just to make sure the locknut does not churn it up when you fit it

So it's just friction, and the fact that the nut is left hand threaded that keeps it from coming loose?

 No, not friction....it's true mechanical interference.  The sequence of assembly is timing pinion, plain washer, oilpump worm, locking washer (tang towards crank), locknut.   The tang of the lockwasher is trapped in the groove in the crank, so can't move. Tighten the worm, put on the locking washer, then add and tighten the locknut.  Bend the edge of the lockwasher over a flat of the locknut.

 Assemble with Loctite for belt and braces.

 Time for a relaxing beer, seated on the bespoke engine stand.

I'll try to bend an edge over the nut but there's not much to play with, maybe 3 mm in the middle of the flats.
That relaxing beer is one of the vertical supports on my bespoke engine stand, need to find another brick to swap in there.

Just about got enough of an edge of the washer over the nut. Now is there any advice on how you do the same on the clutch/main shaft washer. I can't think how I'm going to get anything in there to get behind it and lever it over.

on the 6 spring clutch I use a cow mouth chisel to start bending down the lock washer

Imagine a very narrow but very deep wood chisel

minto cows mouth are old school chisels from when men were men and hand chiseled key ways in steel shafts and cut steel sheet with chisels of various shaped ends,  but the one I use is what my old man made  [ the ones from grandad are far too big for the clutch lock washer job ]. it is a small version of a full size cold chisel with a curved end that allows you to get in awkward places.

I used to have some of my Grandads tools, I had no idea what some of them were for, sadly nearly all of them have been lost during house moves etc.
I've still got quite a few of my dad's tools but it's all woodworking stuff.
I can see a chisel of that description being ideal for that particular job.
I could possibly have used a small wood turning gouge that I own, but a friend borrowed all my lathe chisels about 7 years ago!!!
