A10 plunger 1951 camshaft
« on: 30.05. 2020 13:29 »
Hi! I bought 334 camshaft for my bsa but it doesn't fit. It's smaller than the one I have. Can you please tell me if this one i have is 356?

the old one looks 356, it should be stamped on the right end as you look at the picture, I have no idea about the new one but that should be stamped on the end also.    edit maybe the new one is early long stroke engine, I am sure someone will know

I bought 334 and as you see it doesn't fit.
Is there a possibility that they changed numbers of camshafts in 1952?

Fearie   Looks like an early A7 Longstroke Cam. Two part numbers for this, 67-690 and later, 67 695.  Original parts have the number stamped on the end.  The Longstroke motor looks similar to the later engine, but there are differences, camshaft is one of them.

Longstroke cam is 178mm long, 334 cam measures 186mm.  Both shafts are the same, to the shoulder, the difference is that the longstroke cams are narrower.

Where on earth did you get it?

For later camshafts BSA did not change the numbers, they just added different cam profiles.

67-334  Standard cam, suited to low compression engines, a good all round performer. The camshaft on the basic A7 A10 machines.

67 356  A more sporting performance, Star Twin, Rocket etc, good with flat top and higher compression pistons. Not such a smooth ride, unless you're lucky.

67 357  Fitted to Spitfire Scrambler, Super Rocket, Rocket Gold Star. A truly lively performer.

 Swarfy.

Hi! I bought it on classic bike shop. Described as 334. So if I buy 356 it will fit for my cylinder head?

Yes 67 356 will work. Just make sure the new cam does not catch on the crankcase as the lobes are slightly bigger. You may have to shave a bit of the case away, or you may be just fine.

Was the Classic Bike Shop in the UK? You may be able to return it as it is wrong for your engine. If you ordered 334 they sent the wrong one. Does it just say STD? It should have a part number stamped.

Just found this on eBay

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bsa-A7-Longstroke-Camshaft-1947-50/283877362305?_trkparms=aid%3D333200%26algo%3DCOMP.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D225076%26meid%3Df8680335abcf41ce8ad9dc2bd89b0c66%26pid%3D100168%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D283889874020%26itm%3D283877362305%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D5411%26algv%3DItemStripV3%26brand%3DBSA&_trksid=p5411.c100168.m2941

Definitely a Longstroke Cam, but the packaging looks to be marked 67 334, so  a mis identified product. Sadly the picture of the pack definition is poor, but appears an error which could account for your incorrect purchase.

Looks like someone at Hepolite got the wrong specs, and there may now be wholesale returns on a large scale and bargains in Longstroke Camshafts. To be honest I would not think  Longstoke Cams would have a big enough market to warrant production and distribution by W*s**l

 Additional

Googled the stock line WW27255, and yes, says Cam 334 for A7,  but a big error somewhere, its a Longstroke Cam in the pack, not a 334.

Other sellers are also offering this item WW27255 as A7 Camshaft 67 334.   Well they will until it hits the fan in a big way when  folks don't get what they ordered.

Ordering a Hepolite A10 Camshaft gets you 67 356.  Looks like the proper 334 profile has been overlooked for now in the rush.
