A7 ,A10 Alloy Barrel update

Hi there , well with all the pandemics going on I can now do some real work !! Here is a rough  build up of ther A10 Alloy barrel ,its the first tryout casting , and first program check .I got it almost right just need a tick more meat on the corners !! Thats now been done and cast .But ofcourse the machine shop  are not working !!You win a few you lose a few . But it gives me time to build the engines for next years Bonneville ,500/650/750,and run the first one on the road and put a few thousand miles on the clock.But one things form sure it sure is lighter !! Yes I will be ,as there seems to be no barrels available anywhere .And we need to keep these great motorcycles on the road and not in museums !!That why Im making a new twin carb heads ,get the old girl keeping up with the best of them .

Absolutely brilliant to see somebody putting in serious work to keep our bikes going and improve them if possible.

A cylinder barrel is 'relatively' easy - 2/3 days making the pattern then a day or so machining and fitting liners. If making batches, the pattern time is amortized and making jigs to cut machining time becomes viable. But a cylinder head? Life is too short to go there. I wouldn't even consider making a pattern for that.

Why liners and why not Nikasil ?

I've looked into doing the same thing, cost was going to be about $3000 NZD for the finished product for a one off

Am I correct that the combustion chamber cores are intentionally small to allow the chambers to be machined to shape?

I'd expect it to come in around the £1000-1100 doing it over here with cast liners, Nikasil hasn't really had any problems for decades and is used by all the major manufacturers, I was looking at it from the point that rebores aren't needed so you can select what size piston you want and stick with it

Yes I will do the first ones with liners , everybody can fix those ! And are easier and cheaper to install and make .But I will try out the alloy Nikasil on my planned Bonneville racer ,I dont know if Nikasil gets on with a Nitromethane !Because thats what Im running it on .But ofcourse I will be road testing both liner and Nikasil on the road ,on petrol , puttinga few thousand miles on the clock.Before hitting the salt .Price , yes your about right ,but I havent worked it all out yet , as its not just the cylinder +liners+plus longer crankase studs as the barrel flange is now 17mm thick .But it will be in that ballpark figure ,as I want to sell them and not have a very expensive toy !!
