assembling my 62 super rocket trying to sort out the main bearing end play and this shim is missing apparently comes in .005 .010 and .030 how do you determine what size is needed and what is the purpose of this shim this is not the shim behind the bearing for crank end play ......I was just looking in the parts book and noticed I didnt have any shim there .

That is only used if required for chain alignment between the engine sprocket and clutch.
Occasionally a thicker one is required.

sean you could try a straight edge from clutch drum teeth to engine sprocket teeth or put the chain on and spin the clutch drum to see where the engine sprocket likes to sit on the sleeve by trial and error. moving the engine sprocket about and spinning the clutch several times until your happy with where it wants to run.

everything looks pretty happy just the way it is .....dont see any sign of un even wear on chain or sprockets .....just seeing the pic in the parts book and wondered why mine didnt have a shim , ....I will check again on final assembly
