G'day muggy.
I had a rattle like that a while back. I think yours is mild.

Sounds like you got off lightly. I had a similar problem, wide open throttle, no load. Slid off on diesel on a roundabout and the handlebars bent, stretching the throttle cable wide open with the rear wheel off the ground.
Slight timing side rattle was the crankcases cut in half by the snapped con rod. It was still running on one when I picked it up...

MG. In the light of your latest report of events, the answer seems plain. I just wish this had been mentioned to start with, rather than me assuming the problem had come on over time.

So now it's possibly a stretched rod, piston kissed valve and valve is slightly bent / pushrod bent etc. Best check those tappets as I intimated earlier, and run a compression test. Always best to diagnose the problem before stripping down if at all possible.

Or might it just be a little scuffing/pickup on the piston skirt?

    Hi Guys
Here is I think another reason for engine rattle, it's only a theory  maybe others have proved it. I recently purchased a new set of cam followers 'Made in England' but not the very expensive ones. I found that the center exhaust followers would rotate much more than original genuine ones and when I measured them they were nearly - 0.010" across the flats, down on the original ones. I have returned them and I am using a mixture of new and used genuine ones, I also am using the best pin I have and I found a variation of 0.002" between pins.
The followers will naturally try to turn when the engine runs and also affect its inlet partner this is potentially quite a clatter and will give the twisted wear pattern seen sometmes,  the singles have a much better arrangement.
           Any thoughts
                   Chris

i have a thought that says everything for sale that replaces a part looks like it will do a job but is not capable of doing the original parts job!
