Superflash oil tank.
« on: 28.04. 2021 12:06 »
Ok so I’ve finally found a SF oil tank. BUT the guy will only swap for a A10 twin manifold. If you have an original twin manifold for sale let me know. I believe it is around the late ‘50’s. The SF oil tank is the last piece of the puzzle I need.

Hi Mick,
That's  like asking for the winning lotto numbers  *problem*

Original twin manifolds are super rare, A pair sold on ebay a while ago for stupid money
I saw somewhere that replica's had been made to the correct original pattern, but cannot remember where now
I would try Mike Reilly as a first option

Hi Mick
Exactly which manifold does this guy want? To fit a pair of carbs or a single carb to a twin port head, I may be able to help.

pardon my ignorance but how does a SF oiltank differ to a GF oiltank?
Agree the alloy twin port head manifolds made in 54/55 only are rare as hens teeth. I have one on my 54 but have never come across another.

Bugga, I missed it. I would have bought it.
I have an SS head on the 650 Cafe. Easy to open up and fit SR valves.
That new valve seat looks a bit dodgy!

Scrolling down it says it's out of stock anyway.  Would be interested to know if these oil tanks were specifically made for the SF, or if as with the toolbox they were swiped from another model.  I believe the toolbox used on the SF began life on the C10L bikes. Cheers

do you have a picture of one? The oil tanks on the 54 daytona race bikes were a refunctioned toolbox. BSA where possible used common parts across the ranges

Afraid not. I think rocking horse poo would be appreciably easier to find than some of the original SF parts.  Hence why mine is a SF bobber rather than a full on restoration.

this one looks suspiciously like an m20 tank.
however just looking at the parts list for the a7/a10 including the superflash (49-53) ,no tinware parts appear specifically listed for the superflash

You can bet the basic pressing started life on another model. My '53 Parts List Super Flash supplement lists the tank complete as  67-8362.  The filler cap is 66-8351 so looking for tanks with this cap and accompanying split pin 35 707 plus filter 29 7962 could turn up something that will be close enough for now.  M20  and early C range are a  a good call for starters. Early B range worth a look.

Pre 1949 parts catalogues listed in the Forum Literature Section cover all models from the whole BSA Range, so while a bit of a chore looking, all parts for all models are listed and illustrated in one place.

Mick, do you have a photo of the oil tank on offer. And is he after the single manifold or the twin carb manifolds?
I might be able to help.
But I have a propensity to keep parts for future needs.
I also have a plunger SF in construction, I should do an update.

Yep the designers & engineers all bitched endlessly in their books, magazine articles how much of their designs were hindered by BSA's rule that no new part could be commissioned if an existing part can be modified to fit.
This is why you get things like stationary engine part numbers in motorcycle parts lists .

When I was looking at making fuel tanks it worked out there only around 14 different top pressings used to make around 70 different tanks if you exclude the badge pressings which were done after the tanks was pressed in any case .
