TT John's copper rocker gaskets
« on: 16.07. 2021 19:45 »
Superb improvement, so far after 100 ish miles, only a tiny drip from a rear corner which seems to have stopped since retightening the nut on that corner. The Clingersill gasket previously used disintegrated after very little use.
As a massive bonus, these make getting the rocker box on and rocker cups sited over the push rods a breeze.
Now to find a way of stopping the primary drive case oil falling out. Lol.
Well worth 18 quid of anyone's money.
Cheers

TT John's rocker box copper gaskets are a savior to us BSA users. Fitted them to my A10 and not a drop of oil to be seen.
Well done John an excellent product.

Ciderman, the only one I had issues with was the rocker box gasket, the rest were fine. I think the rocker box is prone to movement and vibration so mine just dropped to bits in no time and leaked like a leaky thing.
All the other Clingersill gaskets I have managed to clean up and reuse on this latest rebuild.
Definitely recommend the copper gaskets for rocker box though.

TT and Cu gasket users,
Can I presume that at the low temperatures of the rocker box that the copper will not harden or need annealing between fittings like a head gasket does?

col it doesn't matter what the temperature is or has been, once it's been disturbed it needs  a coat of looking at on the gas job... i have been to the pub, just thought i would let you know *beer*

Yep, I agree, never ever (re)fit a copper gasket without annealing first.

Aye, apparently it gets work hardened by tightening it down too, so annealing is necessary.

Does a copper gasket get thinner and thinner over time?

A small gas torch will do the job, as will a domestic gas stove. Heating to cherry red all over is the optimum, but it's just as effective "chasing the red bit" on the mrs' kitchen stove. ;)

I place the gasket on a lit kitchen cooker gas burner and also play the flame from my plumbers gas torch over the surface. I cannot get the whole surface cherry red at the same time but it works well.

Quenching in cold water gets most of the oxide off the copper. The rest I remove with a metal kitchen scourer.
