Best head gasket?
« on: 28.09. 2021 21:24 »
Good morning gentleman.... In New Zealand anyway. Spring is around the corner.
My question - I think the A10 (cast iron head) came out with a copper, asbestos sandwich head gasket originally.....is that so and is solid copper better?
I can't get one in NZ.... anyone particularly good for one of those on the UK?

Hi Ewen
I think solid copper is definitely the way to go. I don't have any experience of the asbestos sandwich gaskets on my GF (They're probably illegal now), but I had a solid composite one let go after a couple of hundred miles. I replaced it with a solid copper one which has been good for over a thousand miles now. I don't know about UK suppliers but Classic Bike Spares in Aus have them;

Following advice on this forum I annealed Mine before fitting.
Cheers

I was under the impression that carbon fibre head gaskets were rated good by members. Sold by Draganfly Motorcycles https://www.a7a10.net/forum/index.php?topic=10058.0

Ditto. Did tens of thousands with mine, 7.25:1, well-annealed,  with nary a problem. Less need to retorque after fitting, too, than with the composites. Mine hardly slackened off at all, but being paranoid, I did check after the very few occasions the head had to come off.

Composite gaskets fail because of inadequate clamping force. The old BSA Service Sheets say to tighten the head bolts and "Make them really tight". OK for the backyards of the 1950's, but in these more enlightened times what sort of torque figures are folks working to?

Goes without saying the barrel threads need to be clean and the blind holes cleared of anything to cause the bolts to bottom. Bolts need to be lightly lubricated and fitted with nice substantial washers. Parts book ref shows them to be 64 Thou thick. Later A50 and A65 models with higher power outputs all moved over to the solid copper type.

Composite types (copper/asbestos) were the mainstay of the UK Auto Industry for many years until the spectre of asbestosis and compensation claims gave us the cardboard and aluminium  types we see today.

If you ever come across a WW2 Gas Mask, don't try it on. The filter medium was asbestos. Brought to light by claims from workers at the Boots Company in Nottingham, who made gas masks under a Government Contract. In those days the harmful long term effects of breathing in the dust of this widely used mineral fibre were not  appreciated.

Thanks for the advice. For the benefit of the NZ guys... I did track a head gasket down at British Motorcycle Patrs in Auckland ($NZ49. 00) but I think I'll make a solid bopper one.
How thick should the copper sheet be?
What should I torque the head bolts to?

I guess you tried britishspares? They list 67-0255 for $31 but indicate zero or low stock.

From memory I bought a gasket set from Draganfly which (back then) included the solid copper head gasket, but that would take 4 weeks in the current climate.

I was once told that for an iron head you do it as tight as you can manage.

Pretty sure I could twist the bolts off with "as tight as you (I) could manage." My garage might be big enough for a 10' cheater bar. *work* :o *smile*

Struggled to find a solid gasket for the A7 that wasn't actually for an A10. Ended up going with composite. If I live long enough I might find out how good (or bad) it works.
