Hi All
I have a 57ish BSA A7 with Ariel Hubs.
I have removed the rear wheel to investigate the whining noise, and we have identified that the inner hub is rubbing on the inside of the brake plate. What on earth.
Can anyone see anything obvious on the photo thats missing from the wheel or any suggested issues to look for?
Once again thanks in advance

The judicious fitting of a large washer between brake plate and hub cures that.

Hi Rex, please can you elaborate? Is there a washer missing, or is this a recognised retro fit suggestion? Would a washer not potentially cause the wheel to bind? Sorry for my confusion.
Thanks
Steve.

I think its all here.
I notice the bearing thats fitted code is LS10 v3 , however online the bearing code seems to be 89 3022
I have cross referenced these and the appear to be the same width 5/8th inch, or 15.88mm
Unless the spacer was fitted wrong or my spacer on the brake plate has worn down, hence the washer suggestion.
My good mate is investigating further, anyone else had a similar issue?

On the second photo - bottom right - why is there a small spring there?  Is it the cam return spring gone walkabout?

Steve.

Over the decades parts become worn, distorted, swapped-around and generally abused, so if the brake plate kisses the hub at any point adding the thinnest-possible shim/washer between the brakeplate centre and the bearing inner gives a little clearance.
Note, these wheel bearings are Imperial-sized, and you're confusing BSA part numbers with bearing reference numbers, but the bearing sizes won't have lead to your problem.

Thanks Rex, that makes sense. Yes I think that's the way we might need to go, I understand now what you mean, by putting a washer in between the bearing it would push out the plate more.
Thanks for confirming regards to the bearings.
Would maybe need to stick it in place with something?!

I'm not too sure, I will double check this today Ted, thanks.
