Info on BSA Princess grey
« on: 03.10. 2009 05:49 »
Hi. Does anyone have the formula for Princess grey or know of a car colour that is a good match? I'm approaching tank painting time on my 61 A10SR and intend to do it in the optional princess grey (metallic?) Thanks.

As an alternative idea, does anyone have any tinware in Princess grey that would act as a sample for coulour matching. I could either buy or borrow with a deposit. 'RS motorcycle paint' say they can match it if I can source a sample. Any offers or ideas greatly appreciated. Many Thanks. Peter

I'm sorry your not getting much help with this Pete, I'm sure the lads here would help if they could. Cant say I've seen an A10 or A7 in Princess grey? I'd have thought the colour was more for Bantams but must admit I've not taken a lot of notice... Hope something is sorted soon!

Try this

They claim to have 30000 coulours dating from 1913

Hi Mike.  Thanks for the reply.   I have already tried RS motorcycle paints as they are quite close to me.   They have it listed as a colour but no formula for it, but say if I can come up with a sample they should be able to match it.
As a third idea, I have some Berger car colour chip books from the 1970's to the late 90's, if there was somebody with a Princess grey machine, whatever model, I could bring the books to the bike and try to pick out a car colour to match. Obviously East Anglia would be good for me but I would consider travelling further afield.  Regards, Peter

I went looking for that exact thing and came up with '62-'66 Jensen C-V8.

edit:

P.S. That is, looking in response to your request. I don't have a bike that color.

edit 2:

Oops! That wasn't what you were asking. Anyway, maybe they could show you a chip for the Jensen.

Just a thought but is the grey you are after the same as the late rocket three's frame. If so maybe there is a rocket three/triple club of some kind that may be able to help.

Hi. Just in case anybody has been following this thread. I have managed to find a petrol tank that was originally Princess Grey although it is currently red. There is some original paint on the underside that (I hope) R S Paint can match when I get the tank down to them and then add it to their database for future use. Regards, Peter
ps.  I've also just bought the remnants of a 1958 A7 that was originally Princess Grey as well (separate to the tank)

Hi All.
Further to my request for info on 'Princess Grey' as offered as a colour option for a few years, Does anybody know what format the coachlining takes? I'm assuming its lined in gold, is this correct? is it a single line or a thick and a thin as used sometimes? Any advice most welcome.
Regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

The BSA Twin Restoration book by Roy Bacon states that the fuel tanks painted Princess Grey had chrome side panels that were lined in Red.

I've just found this picture and I hope that I can upload it ok.

From a distance it looks as though the tank is lined in gold but in close-up it's definitely red but looks like two lines.

Hi Beezageezauk.
Thanks for the picture. I agree with you, on full zoom it does appear to have twin lines in red. I assumed they would be gold to match the different colouring of the tank badge when grey was specified. Regards, Peter

Happy to oblige Peter.

BTW, I don't know of anybody who is reproducing the correct tank badges.  They seem to to have been used for that particular year only.  The '58 B31 used the same badges.

If anyone has a spare in reasonable condition I will be quite happy to buy it.
