BSA Super Rocket tachometer
« on: 28.09. 2022 19:43 »
Hi I am new to this forum so hopefully someone can help me. I have a 1960 Super Rocket and the rev counter didn't work. I changed the oil pump drive with the tangs on (the old ones were broken) and bought a new tacho cable. I placed the spacer and spade into the pump and then connected the cable. The outer cable measures 38" whilst the inner is half an inch longer. My problem is that the inner seems about half an inch too short and doesn't reach the square on the spade when connected to the tachometer. Have I got a short cable or am I missing something . Thanks Tony

Have you got the right cable? I think that the cable for the oil pump drive is shorter than that.
It sounds like you have the cable for the tacho gearbox on the magneto drive which has a spade drive.

you need the 2ft 10/1/2 inch cable 34/1/2 inch, part number 42-9227 not the 38inch

Thanks for your help I have now purchased a shorter cable that (just) fits. It appears very tight on left lock and the bends are very sharp. Is this normal or am I missing something.

Your new cable looks to be too short - the bends from the drive and to the tacho head are too sharp I would say.

I bought the new cable (34.5") after being told the 38" that came with the bike was the wrong one ( no inner originally so obviously didn't work when I bought the bike). The 2 ends of the new 34.5" cable fit on the oil pump end and the tacho head end its just it seems too short. The 38" seems to be the correct length but hasn't the right fitting on the oil pump end. I been told that the longer length is for the magneto connection. Bit confused as the 38" seems the right length but the 34.5" has the correct fittings...

Hi Tony,
It looks like you have RGS style instrument mountings ?
These place the rev counter and speedo higher than on a Super Rocket because of the angled brackets
making the SR cable too short

The photo shows the mounting for the tacho and Speedo. Are you saying there is yet another different cable for this type which is longer than for the standard Super Rocket?

Here is a pic of the mounts on my 62 super rocket …. Your appear to be on an angle which would make the cable tight as John said

I think it probably is the angle of your tacho mount as has been mentioned.

Thanks for the information John . My Speedo and Tacho brackets look to be the standard RGS ones. If there is another longer cable which has the square drive on both ends do you have a ref number for it?  Thanks Tony

Hi Tony,
A separate part number does not seem to appear on the RGS document G21

https://cybermotorcycle.com/archives/bsa-a10/g21.htm

I may have the old cable from my project RGS, if memory permits I will see if I can find it and get a measurement
