Side stand
« on: 18.10. 2022 19:30 »
After a recent recovery trip on the back of a flat back recovery vehicle, my side stand has somehow got bent, over use of restaining straps me think.
What's the best way to straighten it out, it's an original BSA 1960 A10 side stand, bolted to welded frame lug.

G'day Bb.
If it is a forged s/stand a good dose of localized heat should work.
A common problem when the s/stand is down when ratcheting a bike securely. A no no in my book.

Blimey Billy I don't even trust my side stand to prop the bike when stationary never mind in transit  *eek*

I don't know if you've seen them but a very good thing to use is one of these flip/flop channels that locates the front wheel and basically holds the bike up straight allowing you to attach your straps. I generally put 4 straps on, a pair from the bars close to the triple clamps going forward at 45 degs out and down and another pair going back from each side going out and down. i.e to the four corners of the trailer. The bike then rides comfy on its own suspension. Another thing to watch especially if using ratchet straps is not to pull down too hard as you can damage the forks by over compressing them.

As for the stand, might be worth having a close look where the hinge plate attaches to the frame. Hopefully there won't be any sign of cracking paint or gaps opening up to indicate a strained frame or welds. If all good I guess you can say the stand has been well tested and should be fine once you've straightened out the arm!

I'm just amazed that tie-downs can be tightened enough to bend a sidestand.. *eek*

I had broken down and the recovery company sent a flat bed truck, and the driver used the ratchet straps with the bike on its side stand. To be fair it did not move on the journey back home, think the driver was an ex sailor.
I have still been using the side stand since this adventure, with no apparent damage to its mounting, but convinced the bike is leaning more than before, thanks for the advice, will remove during winter layup and try some localized heat to straighten it.

During winter layup, plan to straighten the bent side stand, has anybody modified the stand to enable to kick it out to extend, I seem to have to lean over the bike and extend with my hand, which at my age is getting a challenge.
Notice most modern bikes have some form of extension to side stand to enable kick out.

G'day Billy.
Yes I welded on a 5/16" rod to make it easier on the Cafe. Bent to suit.

I added a tiny nut and bolt with a short piece of tube to the corner of the 'foot' of the side stand. It just allows my boot to pull the stand out.

Thanks BB. I just checked the MCN in Morrisons. That road test didn't seem to be featured. Either Morrisons have not yet got the latest copy or it's been and gone or you are telling me about a copy that hasn't come out yet. If you are able to scan the piece and DM it to me I'd be greatfull 👍
