Full Width 8inch hub parts
« on: 24.10. 2022 20:01 »
I would like to know if these shoes are correct ones because of the shape and also is the lever correct its a short lever and thought it a bit short for a front brake.

They are more like what i was expecting to find inside the hub, but ones i founf dont seem to locate on either fulcrum  they just sit on 2 offset cams held in position by the springs ?  *conf*

Correct shoes have flats at the cam end, semi circular at pivot end as normal to locate on the pivot pin. A brake lever measured with a caliper has an overall length of 920mm.

Scrap those safety critical parts....they have the mark of the bodger about them. Brake lever looks a crudely homespun effort, shoes modified to be semi-floating?

Shoes are handed, the lateral offset differs slightly. For the 8"Brake 42 5867 gets you a leading shoe,  42 5868 is the trailing shoe. And yes, they are hard to tell apart!

Looking at your second photo it looks to me as though some previous owner has ground off half  of the circular end of the shoe to maybe make it easier to fit a very bad idea they are now fit for scrap.

Maybe a prior owner was converting to floating shoes? I’m not sure that would be the way to do it, but it might work?

*eek* You wont like these next pics then, cant understand what his thinking was. Why fit same fulcrum pin top and bottom but grind one half of the cams off then put a home bodged lever which is too short to the bottom one. This has now only got the ability to push out one brake shoe and the other wont move , so reducing brake effect by 50 % ?
I did think at first he was attempting a twin leading shoe type thing but then he screwed some attachment to the top pin to sit the brake cable adjuster into by about 4mm no further as the grease point is still blocking the nut  *conf*

That cam bush should be fixed.... looks another bodge. On the original design the cam runs directly in the casting. For the 8" brake look for casting number 42 5853 under the dirt. There are four shoe support lugs.  Maybe a trick of the light, but that backplate looks more domed than the correct part. A used backplate  complete with shoes is  the easiest way forward. That anchor lug also does not inspire confidence.

The small hole by the cam spindle is for a brake lever return spring, usually found on the Triumph Full Width Hub. Count the ribs on the brake drum. With 5 it's a BSA, 7 it's Triumph.

Additional The links in the following post show a Triumph 17" Wheel and a BSA Single sided front brake. Alas neither are suitable and in my estimation the BSA wheel has never been anywhere near a Gold Star!!!!

Thank you for that Terry, first one i would love but too dear for me and the second one is collection only.
Swarfy,  my brake plate is correct number 42-5853 and is slightly domed so dunno. The hole did have spring in and is the only new shiny part on it . looking on Ebay all the shoes looking identical to mine with the hooks for springs (not holes) seem to be Triumph Bonne etc T100 .Would Triumph brake plate have same part number as Bsa ?
When you say ribs on brake drum , if you mean in between spokes on the hub there are 6 *eek* yet another weird thing or what ?

Dave.. Must have been the camera angle. That basic casting is the correct  8" front one for a Late Model A10 or Super Rocket, along with the A7 Shooting Star, all fitted with cast iron full width hubs front and rear. The number of ribs on the drum are the same on both front and rear wheels.

Triumph full width cast iron hubs are similar with minor detail differences. Triumph part numbers are not the same as BSA.

Someone else can have a look at their unmolested wheels and count the ribs to confirm.

Thanks Swarfy. so now at least i know the brake plate is correct. I found some new wheel bearings still boxed from my days as a forklift engineer, fitted them today and at least made some progress. Tommorow i can order the fulrum pins for the plate in stainless and a pair of the correct brake shoes, any recommended ones from anyone ? Cheers Dave
