Torqueing A10 SR gearbox nut
« on: 07.12. 2022 15:00 »
I experience a consistent oil leakage on my A10 SR Gearbox due to problem torqueing the lower left nut of the Outer Gearbox cover. The nut recess does not allow a normal box-, ring- or socketspanner to be properly engaged. Please advice on Work around

I use a 3/8 inch drive 1/4BS socket.

Apparently my recesses are narrower as my 3/8 socket does not fit. Would additional washers underneath nut to bring out the nut be an acceptabele way?

Julian, is your socket a standard one or one with reduced wall thickness?

Socket is Britool make which I bought to deal with these nuts when I first dismantled a pre unit box over 40 years ago. It does have a reduced diameter end.

G'day Racker.
Do you have the long nuts  *eek* and not std short nuts? As per Juls last pic.

Hi Muskrat

Yes I do have the long but. As you can see from the last picture the top of the nut is covered by the gearboxshell. As this is very close to the nut there is no room for a standard socket or box spanner. Poor execution of manufacturer

Take the cover off and get the end of the hole faced
Then use a thick close fitting washer under the bolt
And no matter how tight you do up a bolt it will not stop a warped or deformed cover from leaking

G'day Racker.
Welcome to BSA spannering. I have a few modified sockets and spanners. My most used one is a 5/16 bs ring spanner slimmed down and cut short for the front middle barrel nut and the two front rocker box nuts.
The nut in question can be got to with a 3/8" drive 3/16 ww socket.
Cheers
