When the Shackleton's retired in 1991 they sent one around all the military airfields in the UK to say 'goodbye'.
I was based at RNAS Culdrose at the time and I can still remember the glorious sound as 4 Griffon engines were taken to max throttle with the brakes on as the Shackleton prepared for take-off. Big piston engines with huge propellers always sound impressive.
