E type clutches were a nightmare,  suspension apart, exhaust off (broken studs) engine / box out the front .... eventually I refused to do them.

back in the day we ,a group of mates bought Mk2 as they were so cheap due to petrol prices and high repair costs . We'd buy a really nice 3.4 mk2 later "s"b types for £25 to £50 safe that even if scrap we got our money back and loads of spares infact when i bought my first the ex owner gave me another one free!
release bearing and slipper plate and cover jag 0ver a £100 trade we used FX3 taxi spares about £15 ,same for rubber suspension bits say jag cost an arm and a leg ask for standard tri bits buttons.
On RD's comment a  mate owned an  early  e type and we found him under it one day ,because his mech skills were confined to tyres ,we were worried he said he was doing the clutch and was busy unding random nuts and bolts ,we dragged him out had a quick look and shot out ,the idiot had been undoing all the bolts from the torsion suspension another few minutes it would have dropped on him as he didn't even have a jack under there .We sorted it for him and good guy he was we never  had to pay for any tyres .repairs we needed

this is the resistor that only lets the heater fan work on number 4 full whacko , is that thing on the top a diode or maybe something else , i can't get any continuity or ohm measurement across it but get readings of ohms on the other bits. Christine will not answer my questions , bggr  *problem* *bash*

looks like a diode - should allow current one way only (which you know)

Hi All
Berger,
To the best of my knowledge it is a thermal fuse, it is the usual part to fail
If blown there will be no continuity through it
Bridge it out and see if the fan speeds work
I had to replace one in my Scudo and it was quite expensive 50-60?
They rely on the air flow to cool them, so if the pollen filter gets blocked up they can overheat and blow

If the silvery part of that item is metallic, John is probably right. No end of trouble with them on domestic heaters. I usually just bridge them and take care not to leave the heater on full blast (we never do anyway) whilst unattended.

Don't buy a Renault Meganne....Same fault, car is built around that heater blower resistor pack, maintaining the French Tradition of complexity for something simple.

As for clutches, back in the 1980's GM FWD vehicles had a gearbox input shaft that telescoped back into the box. On a good day this made a clutch change a half hour job, press the pedal, clamp the pressure plate, whizz it off, change the bits, align the driven plate with the gearbox input shaft, 6 bolts and the access covers back on and you're done.

The cost accountants had their say, later vehicles require a bit more time and effort. No wonder that for driving schools, police and local delivery vehicles  Vauxhall (GM) were the choice. Astra's, Nova's, Cavaliers....most rotted away by now.

 Swarfy.

That infuriates me.  I've been known to return stuff for a refund because I've found a cheaper way to fix an issue.  Having said that, if you've got the complete unit, and the problem persists, you can start to investigate elsewhere. *dunno2* *beer* *beer*

G'day Bergs.
I know where your coming from.
A few years ago Deb's 2002 Mitsubishi Magna had a heater leak into the cab. A $2 part took 3 days to replace. Seats, steering wheel, center console, instrument panel and the whole dash out.  *pull hair out*

Soz Bergs, forgot that you'd been everywhere on 'Christine' anyway - that doesn't quite sound how I meant it.
